  1. Hi all, We've got a 2001 Td5 with all the toys including the HK Stereo. The problem is that the CD changer under the drivers seat has packed up and despite removing it, cleaning it, wiggling wires etc it's stopped working and we cant get the magazine out of it. As the missus drives this most of the time I'm getting fed up with her constant moaning about the bloody changer not working so I need to shut her up!. I've looked on Ebay for a replacement changer, but they are few and far between and mainly for 300 disco's, not D2's. I believe the original is an Alpine unit, but is there a way to replace it with something I can buy down at Halfords, or other online place? Has anyone swapped the original for something else, and what did you have to buy to make it work? The ideal scenario would be to buy a changer and a small adaptor lead for the original changer lead that's already there, bolt it onto the old brackets and tell her to be on her way. Any ideas? She's really getting on my nerves Thanks in advance Neil.
  2. Hi, I have a 72 SWB Land Rover 88. Quick Question - is it normal for the yellow lever to pop up when selecting Low range? I thopught you would be able to have low range AND four wheel drive, but it wont let me do that. Are they all like that? Cheers Neil.
  3. Interesting Topic. The Water sensor lamp on my td5 comes on briefly occasionally. Presumably I shouldnt worry too much if they later deleted it.
  4. I thought I saw somewhere that there was a shuttle valve repair kit for these. would that not help?
  5. I have a 2001 Td5 disco, and have had a nanocom for a couple of months, and yes, it does work fine. Couple of annoyances though: 1) theres no detailed manual for what the settings (particularly relating to SLABS) do 2) Sometimes the programming (using the software on the laptop) on the nanocom is the wrong way round (example, if using nanocom to raise and lower the rear air suspension, the "lower Left" setting actually "raises right" and vice versa. It's fine once you know this, but we pulled our hair out for a couple of hours thinking somethings screwed with the ecu or soemthing until we realised. 3) Sometimes you can get communication errors, which are a bit of a pain Having said that, I wouldnt be without my nanocom - it's earned its keep in saving going to a specialist to read faults and clear them every time. Neil.
  6. Thanks for the reply. The thing thats wierd about the suspension is that it wont deflate by itself..what I mean is once it's pumped up (which the compressor does easily), it'll stay up permanently. I've used the nanocom to tell the car that it's got coils on the back, rather than air and the bags havent deflated at all. If there was a leek from the bags or piping it would sink whatever we were doing to it. Furthermore, it never deflates all the way down - it's like its thinking "oh, my owners shut the engine off, but I'm way to high at the back, I'll let a certain amount of air out to this level", except that level is too low. As soon as you start it up it's pumping it back up again. Neil.
  7. What a nightmare few days... Firstly, the suspension sunk on our D2. What we'd discovered before was that air was leaking inside the compressor, as well as it drawing more than the 30amps, thus blowing the fuse it was decided a complete new compressor unit was needed. So, 290 quid later and we've fitted the new compressor. All seems o.k, but there are some more mysteries now!. Firstly, when starting the car, it pupms the compressor and raises its rear to about the right height, but there are two lights on the dash (the off road and SLS lights). then, when you switch the car off, it lets a fair amount of air out of the system. it doesnt drop right to the bump stops though, and according to the nanocom it puts it at a height setting of 44 (normal level is about 140ish). So, the questions are: a) should it drop when you switch the engine off, and then rise again when you start it up B) whats the correct waĆ½ to calibrate the height settings...using the nanocom if needed? Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance. Neil.
  8. Hi All, I've been having a few problems with the Air suspension on the TD5 recently and we've discovered that the teflon piston seal on the air compressor has worn out. Apart from this, the compressor works o.k, so I'm a bit loathed to splash out 250 quid on an entire compressor so wondered if anyone had any contacts of where I could just buy the seal from. I know you can buy them for the p38 rangie (my dad bought one for his), but ones for discos seem a bit thin on the ground. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance. Neil.
  9. Literally just got off the blower to mailorder4x4 an ordered my Nancom. Cant wait for it to arrive. Will post up what it's like when I get it. Neil.
  10. Another Quick Update: Took the car to a friend of a friend with a garage and a diagnostic tool, and oddly one of the faults thrown up again is the front left hand abs sensor - which we'd just changed. Looks like we'll have to have the wheel off again and inspect that toothed ring properly and the sensor and see if anything looks wrong. Also about to order some Airsprings from Paddocks as the diagnostics said that the compressor was working overtime trying to keep it inflated....I'd expected to have to change them though. Neil.
  11. Just a bit of an Update: After having the garage clear the fault codes, the lights stayed out and I purchased a front ABS sensor and spent a couple of hours with my old man fitting it. The 3 amigos were still out after this and were perfectly o.k until a trip down to Heathrow yesterday and they all reappeared again on the M25. So, there probably wasnt much wrong with the sensor we removed. Dreading going back to the garage again, just to get the faults read and cleared again, I decided to investigate getting a reader and clearer for myself. Pretty much decided to get a Nanocom, but they dont have any in stock in the UK until mid may :-( But I think this will be the way forward. At 200 quid, it'll pay for itself I'm sure and I think It'll be wise to read the codes before rushing in and changing anything else. Still not tackled any of the other problems, except I have a wiring harness and gasket arriving from Paddock soon. Thanks for the advice, Neil.
  12. The disco's done 102k - Full LR service history, with seemingly everything thats needed doing in the past, being done. The guy said he couldnt even hear the compressor working, but we'll look at the airbags too. I'm searching at the moment about coolant loss, and from what I've seen the small drip of coolant looked like it was from a fairly large steel pipe with a bend at the bottom. I suppose the thing is that any one I bought could have had the same problem(s) - I wrongly thought that having only been at LR within the last 4k miles that it might offer some safety net.
  13. Following on from my last thread about having just bought a 2001 Discovery - this weekend saw the `3 Amigos' appear on the Dash (less than a week after purchase) today, I took it to Woodside Garage in bedfordshire for them to stick it on their computer for a diagnostic. The results are not easy for me to swallow. Basically, the faults narrow down to the following: 1) Near Side Front ABS sensor 2) Injector Harness and Top Gasket (apparantly oil is leaking along the harness and onto the plugs on the ECU?) 3) Air Suspension compressor not working 4) Coolant leak (fortunately seems to just be from a pipe joint, but not 100% sure) 5) Transmission whine they think is coming from the transfer box (they ran it upto 70mph on the ramp and reckon this is the cause of the slight rumble I thought might have been a wheel bearing). So, to start with I'm going to order the ABS sensor and fit that and sort the coolant leak. Any idea where I would get a replacement suspension compressor? - cant seem to find one anywhere other than ebay. Needless to say I'm not very happy at the moment!. Neil.
  14. Thanks all for the replies. Unfortunately, things have taken a bit of a turn for the worse. Yesterday (5 days after picking it up) I got the apparantly `common' three amigos on light up on the dash, which looks like the general consensus is to get it run through some diags first before ripping the wheels apart. To top it off, I just went out and tried Lynall's method to check the suspension, and guess what - that doesnt raise either. I'm hoping that it's a result of the Three amigos, but knowing my luck this weekend, it'll be screwed airbags or something more. Anyone got any experience of Woodside garage in bedfordshire?
