  1. It's fixed!!! Sirocco, you hit the nail on the head! Thank you! The fuel gauge now reads correctly and the fuel light comes on when the tank is almost empty!!! (at flippin last!) The solution was..... A missing earth lead on the gauge was an issue With that sorted I still couldn't get either of the new sender units to work correctly. Low fuel light coming on with a full tank etc. I have managed to repair the old sender sufficiently to re-use it. Not ideal but at least everything now works as it should. Thanks for the help and advice offered.
  2. Thanks for the input gents. So far as I understand the wiring is correct Western. The earth is daisy chained across the gauges, I have to admit to assuming that as the needle was moving the earth must be okay. I'll go back and check that thanks. I'll also double check the wires as per Westerns guidance. Once again, thanks for your help.
  3. Would be very grateful if anybody could shed some light on this issue for me. It's a bit complicated so I'll explain the situation as easily as I can. The vehicle in question 1986 110 diesel. The vehicle is in the latter stages of a complete restoration. I have installed a new fuel tank as part of the restoration project, Tank mounted on small rubber bushes to absorb vibration. The original fuel gauge has been re-used. The vehicle has been completely re-wired. So, that's the background. Now for the problem... I have a new sender unit. 3 terminals on it, the same as the old original. 1- Earth 2-Gauge 3-Low fuel light With the earth terminal earthed directly back to the battery and the remaining two terminals correctly connected, the fuel light illuminates when the float is in the up (tank full) position. The fuel gauge however reads full regardless of the position of the float. So... I took the old sender off the old tank just to try it... Fuel warning light works correctly with this sender, but the fuel gauge still reads full regardless of the position of the float. I should say that prior to the restoration, the gauge and warning light both worked accurately. I have spent hours fettling different combinations of wires in case I had mistakenly put the wires onto the wrong terminals but to no avail. My limited knowledge of the dark arts of electrical wiring has been exhausted. I would greatly appreciate any help with this matter. Thanks in anticipation.
  4. It is my very sad duty to inform you all that this morning Chris V8 passed away. I spoke to his wife this morning who broke the sad news and requested I pass on the news. As many of you know he had been battling cancer for some time. Although I have tried to contact many people today, please accept my apologies if I was unable to talk to you in person. At this point in time, there are no arrangements for the funeral in place. I will remain in contact with his wife and pass on information as and when I get it. Raise a glass tonight to a true Gentleman who will be sadly missed. It goes without saying our thoughts are with his wife and family at this time. Mr Chris Gray Rest in peace my friend.
  5. Hmmmm, thanks for that. Looks like I'm going to have to take the head off again. GRRRRR!
  6. Is it possible to change the valve stem seals on a 300tdi without taking the head off? Cheers.
  7. She runs!!!! Thanks to those who gave help and advice. I was starting to doubt that it would ever run again. She was put straight into work on her first run out on Saturday pulling tree stumps out of the ground! MoT next hurdle. Thanks again folks.
  8. Thanks Western, that's reassurance that I'm on the right lines. I'm only getting an hour here and there to work on it due to family and work, but I'll keep plodding on with it! Thanks for the advice, very welcome! Cheers.
  9. Update: I've had a message from Chris tonight saying... Quote, "Si. Quick update in Carlisle. Looks as if kids [kidneys] ok. Waiting on biopsy results. Will be more chemo probs. Thank everyone for good wishes. Chris." Please consider yourselves thanked! Any further news and I'll update you all.
  10. Finally got the crankshaft off I can now get back on with the task of removing the cambelt and replacing the fuel injection pump. Talk about a job dragging on!
  11. Update: Not good progress. Can't for the life of me get the crankshaft pully off. The 27mm bolt came out easy enough, but the pully!!! Tried both 2 and 3 leg gear pullers no go. Fabricated a puller with some box section 2 long M8 bolts and a 7mm socket (as described in the technical section on here I think) and I still can't shift it!! Do the holes in the pully go all the way through, or are they only recessed? Cheers Si
  12. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place but I have some sad news... I received a phone call last night from ChrisV8's wife. Unfortunately I was unable to speak to her until this morning. It turns out Chris is quite seriously ill and is currently in the intensive care unit at Whitehaven hospital. I will refrain from going into details on here (it being a public forum etc... I hope you understand) Chris' wife has asked me to inform the Land Rover community of his state of health as she is sure it would be his wish. She has also asked me to do this on her behalf as she simply doesn't know the people he was friendly with in these circles (and lets face it, he's helped lots of us in one way or another!) or the forums that Chris uses. To reduce the number of enquires directly to his wife, it has been agreed between his wife and I that I shall act as go between. I will remain in contact with her and update the forums as soon as possible of any developments. I've tried to contact as many poeple as possible by phone to make them aware of the situation, if I've not managed to contact you directly today, please accept my appologies. If you would like further information, (or an address to send 'Get well' cards to) I can be contacted either by PM or on 07780 606 318 Please, lets all send positive thoughts to Chris and his family at this time. Simon
  13. Not much progress recently, family commitments getting in the way. I'll get out there at the weekend and report back!
  14. That is very useful information! Thanks. I've been working late tonight so no chance of getting out on the 110. We'll see what tomorrow afternoon brings. (If my 1 yr old daughter sleeps I might be able to grab an hour or so working on it!!) Need to double check I have the correct point on the flywheel locked for starters. I reckon it must be as the FIP U shaped hole was at 5 o' clock on the other slot. Early night tonight so that I can think straight!!! Thanks again for your help, as Ed says, this problem is getting beyond a joke now but hopefully closer to being resolved. Cheers.
  15. Got the replacement pump on the kitchen table. (don't tell Mrs Thorny!!) Even backing the locking screw off I still don't seem to be able to move the spindal (is that the correct term?) the 2 or 3mm needed to get the locking pin in. Looking like i will have to fit it and then try the method Reb suggested.
