  1. you'll have to help me here (new to teh LR world) who are IRB & Bell?
  2. I thought there was already a topic on this (mine) but couldn't find it. Basically my Defender keeps imobilising itself. I know the sequence of doors and keys to reset it but that's having no effect. I have replaced the key fob with a new one and had it paired to the car - with seemingly no effect. So what next? I live in a very low crime area (not UK), never lock it and never use the alarm so not bothered about the imobiliser so is there a way how the imobiliser can be permanently removed of disengaged?
  3. Matt I was saying No I had manual windows and manual locking......... not that I didn't have a manual to read!! I'll try a search and see what I can download (I don't actually have a manual to read but that wasn't what I meant)!!
  4. ok so the new battery in the key fob hasn't helped..... any other thoughts? BTW I live up a mountain in a village with less than 750 residents in a country with a very low crime rate (Ie french alps) so really not worried about the alarm and/or immobilier not working
  5. yes so perhaps I should put a brand new battery in to the key fob as opposed to one out of the wifes kitchen scales, is there any harm in taping the key fob to the ignition barrell? (I never use the alarm)
  6. Can anyone help me, my immobiliser keeps coming on when I park up (which I now understand it should do) but doesn't turn off without some serious messing around (turn on, turn off, remove key, open door, close door, turn on, turn off, remove key, turn on, turn off, open door, remove key etc etc etc) and then for no real reason it will turn itself off and let me start. I've tried replacing the battery in the key fob with no benefit so is there something else that I can do?? I've looked in my trusty haynes and there's no mention of immobiliser!! Thanks in advance!
  7. Hi Guys....thanks for all of your help on my tale of woe......... all sorted now on this issue...............liked Turner Engineering very much.....really seem to know their stuff, helpfull even when I asked really dense questions BUT at the end of the day Mrs M drew the line on cost......I know you can't really compare new (which Turner do) with reconditioned but we do have a wedding to pay for and are in the 1st year of a new business so have bought a reconditioned with 12 months warranty from the equally nice Ians at The Head Centre.. Head should be delivered Friday morning and I'm coming back to the UK early September to get the Defender back!! Beeing that the only way I suspected something was up was thick smoke and then found oil in the header tank....will I notice a difference??
  8. I'm trying to work out which generation of head I've got......it's not possible to read the engine number, we've tried to clean it off and can't tell.....so looking at the head there are two sets of numbers; On the Inlet side there's a cast number; HRC2880 On the rear/back face of the head there's a number stamped; 44-00-19616 (the 00 might be GG) so from these numbers can anyone tell which generation it is please??
  9. Jim will it last long if welded or is it a cheap option now which will need repairing at some point?? As the engine is already in bits wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to bit the bullet and have it done now as opposed to weld it now, it fail (and sods law it will when it's least convenient) and then have the engine stripped again?? Also we're coming up to the winter and temperatures of minus 20 are quite a common event so with metal contracting might that be more likely to cause it to crack again??
  10. Unfortunately the #1 exhaust port has a cracked/crack in it so looking at new/replacement/refurb heads. Found a few on Fleabay but they've confused me slightly..... #1 describes itself as; Td5 Cylinder head , pressure tested, light skim, all valves reseated. ready to go THREE MONTH'S WARRANTEE, check (cast no HRC2880) #2 says; refurbished Land Rover Discovery TD5 Cylinder Head Assembly Complete with injectors cams, ect full working order will fit 2002 models onwards Part No PGG101050. #3 says; Brand new LAND ROVER TD5 CYLINDER HEAD FITTED WITH VALVES AND SPRINGS READY TO FIT Does this mean that all TD5 Cylinder heads aren't the same?? Therefore how will I know which one I need?? and secondly there's abotu £200 difference between #1 and #2 yet #2 has injecorts, cams fitted...is that worth the £200.. Also is there anywhere else anyone suggests for me to look for a new/replacement/refurb head?
  11. the head is off and it's cracked in one of the exhaust ports...so where's the best place to buy a replacement head from and how much shoudl I be paying??
  12. I suspect you'll need to add and check each of the names in teh cc box before you add the next....well that's how it works on a forum I run which uses IP
  13. if the head gasket had gone would there be a water/oil mix on the dip stick and a white sludge under the oil filler cap??
  14. Agreed that I won't be getting them to rush it....I'm going back to France without the Defender and will come back when it's ready....as to cause what are the possible causes (or are they too numerous to list).....the mileage is 86,000??
  15. an update (for those that care) A friend who owns a garage has had the TD5 in and checked the glow plug and they all look ok, as we're out to the Alps soon I asked him to give it a good service ready for the winter...... As he started we had a peek in the water header tank thing (sorry I'm not technically minded at all) and we found it full of a oil:water mix......more oil than water   head gasket?????? So how many hours does it take for a good mechanic to change a head gasket and is there anything else I should get him to do at the same time??
  16. Good thinking I'll check when they were last replaced (it's got fsh) what sort of mileage should glow plugs last??
  17. Just a quick question...........I've just bought a 2001 TD5 Defender which has done 86,000 miles. Seems to run fine and so far hasn't missed a beat (750 miles in 2 weeks). That said I've noticed that when I start it up quite a lot of white smoke comes out of the exhaust....is this the sign of something serious or just one of those things??
  18. I have seen special dog ramps for dogs to walk up to get into cars etc etc etc......for the life of me I can't remember where but do remember I was looking for dog cages and guards at the time!! HTH
  19. Good suggestion wkw..if all else fails then I will... Thanks for sharing your thoughts SteveBo I have used one as a resort runaroud before and hae found onesuitable....as I'm not doing transfers I won't have to comply with minibus rules and regs!!
  20. Hi I'm new to this forum and Defenders in general but hope someone can point me in the right direction. I need to source a LWB Defender with 11(or more seats) for my business in the French Alps (it's that or a transit type mini bus) I've been scouring the web for months looking for what looks to be a good one. Finally I think I've found it, but want an oppinion of someone who knows. Normally I'd send "that very nice man" or "the 4th emergency service" but can't help thinking that they might be a bit too text book to know if any issue they find is an real issue or not. So, after all the ramble, is there someone near SW Manchester who has the knowledge, time and inclination to check over a potenial purchase for me please? I obviously expect to pay for this service. Many thanks
