  1. Have all the prop bolts (at both ends) been properly tightened as ours had to be retightened after having a prop UJ replaced a couple of weeks back.
  2. When the Dim-Dip relay went on our 300 Tdi, then I found the relay (pink) behind the instrument binacle. No more than a 20min job to change them over.
  3. I know the topic of wiring has come up many times before, but does anyone know of the neatest/easiest way of routing back to the battery for the earth/negative cable? I have found a spare 'live' in the fuse box and got the mainbeam feed to the relay + switch but want to keep things looking tidy without having to take the dash apart too much. Any suggestions or pics? many thanks
  4. Cheers guys, found the problem. It ws the dim/dip relay which burned out - may have something to do with having 'LUCAS' stamped on it Replaced it and I now have dipped beam again Thanks for the response and Merry Christmas David
  5. Right, i'll hve a look tomorow when there is some light. I have also read that on earlier models you can just remove that rela ith no ill effects, is that still the same on the 300Tdi?
  6. The good old Haynes book of lies says that 'all models except station wagons - 68 litres' and that station wagons have a 45.5 litre tank. This fits with our 90 CSW as a 3/4 fill of the tank is aprox. 35 litres. Hope that helps.
  7. Hi all A few days ago the dipped beam headlights on our 300Tdi 90 failed. Having done some searhing on this and other forums, I cheked all the fuses, checked the wiring to the lights themselves and upon fiddling with the colum stalk thought this was the problem. Tried the check of hotwiring the three wires together and low and behold, the same simptoms - dash lights and sidelights on but still no dipped beam. They were working fine untill now but suddenly went. Any chnce it could be the (is this right) 'dim/dip' relay which was mentioned on here a while ago, and if so is it a dash out job to find? Cheers for any help
  8. I had a couple of scary moments whilst driving down to Southampton this evening. Whilst doing about 55mph the engine would just cut out, leaving me coasting to the side of the road - not fun on a fairly busy M27 Each time, the engine just restarted after a minute or so with little difficulty - so why did it cut out? It happened to my dad the other day as well, but that time really struggle to re-start itself. He changed the battery and things seemed to go ok for a couple of weeks untill today. The only thing that I can think of is that on each ocasion the heater (or wheezer) was 'running.' When coming back from southampton, I kept the heater off and there was no problem with the engine. Could an earthing fault, or something equally electrical cause a mechanical engine like a Tdi to cut out? The reason I'm thinking that the electrical gremlins have struck is that also on the way back I lost the use of dipped beam headlights - thankfully the mainbeams stayed active untill the next lay-by. Any thoughts would be very helpful before I start chasing a problem that may not be there! Thanks
  9. Right, what started out as just a noise has now turned into a right pain... Whilst etting under the car to change the oil, I noticed that there was a bit to much play in the front propshaft. Having now removed it it is apparent that one of the universal joints is totally trashed to the point that I am now in posession of three bearing pieces seperate from the uni-joint! I've got a kit to replace the joint but I can't seem to get the old bearings out. Is there a trick that I am missing, or is it really new propshaft time?? I knew I was due a problem but wasn't expecting this as it hasn't to my knowledge been heavily used off road (based on who owned it last and the condition of everything else underneath it
  10. Thanks guys, I've just had another more detailed look at the turbo-intercooler pipes and found that there is a 1/2 inch split on the underside of the top hose! Can't believe that I didn't feel it before, although it would explain whay going up a long but gentle hill the other day ~50mph was all it had to give in 4th or 5th!!! I'm replacing all the oils this weekend anyway so I shall add this to the list as well.
  11. Sorry to pester you all with yet another question on noises, but recently our 1996 300Tdi 90 has started to make a VERY loud whistle/squeak under acceleration. I'm starting to get used to its strange oddities and rattles now (this is our first 'proper' land rover) but this one seems like it needs sorting. It also made a different noise when comming off the accelerator after a long motorway run the other week, but performance as yet dosen't seem to have been too affected. I was wondering if the injectors could make this kind of noise if they were on the way out, or have I got the wrong idea? It was only a matter of time I suppose, it has been perfectly reliable for at least 2 months now so I guess we are due for a problem...
  12. Hi all, I'm still new to this world of never ending job lists so forgive me if this has been asked before. Having spent the last weekend fitting a new towbar, rear exhaust and Mantec wheel carrier to the back of our 'new' 1996 300Tdi 90, I feel rather chuffed as I have no previous mechanical experience My question is will the wheel carrier take the weight of a 265/75 R16 tyre wrapped aroung a standard alloy? Its just that I would like a complete set of 5 tyres the same, so as to avoid having to put a smaller diameter spare on. Also, is it normal for the speedometer needle to 'wobble' a ittle or is this going to be another thing to add to my list of jobs? I think that this forum is great by the way, and has already provided me with some very handy tips - so thank you all!
