  1. Turn up an ally sleeve that press fits over the boss you have and paint it black? I did something similar for my Defender.
  2. Industry standard, or at least the one I work in - large industrial gears, would be not to paint or plate of any kind. The only thing we paint, and that's using a special type of paint, is sand cast surfaces where there is the slight chance of casting sand being eroded out of the cast surface even after treatment. We do not use any plated fittings (bolts, nuts etc.) internally due to the risk of the plating flaking off. The lube is more than good enough to protect the parts. Hope that helps.
  3. Yep, water too but gas usually. Anything that needs a single ratio change to a specific designed speed such as a generator or a pump for example Ok, I'm back next Tuesday, I'll pm you.
  4. Not Landy, but I might be able to get you a sectional drawing through one of our epicyclic gearboxes when I go back to work next week. Let me know if you want me to ask....
  5. Much the same here, last year when I was off work for a long period the Enemy bought me a few copies of LRM which was ok but I soon got bored with it, as I did before with LRW and LRO which I took when I first got interested in the marque. At that time I wasn't aware of forums and the like and have still got boxes of those early mags, including some #1's, like Michele I haven't been able to throw them away but having moved house I guess they will have to go along with all the Cars & Car Conversions etc. I have had even longer!. Is anyone else a reader of one of the other strong one make automags? I wonder how the Ford and VW enthusiast mags are coping and if they are going the same way. It seems the way forward is to publish something that can be read over t'internet, I was looking for info on the March 2-4-0 car and came across "Classic & Competition Car" which is a free magazine that you subscribe to by email, a bit like "the Landy" I guess except this seems to be run independently from any sponsors other than the guys photo business that publishes it. I wonder if the way forward could be the amalgamation of a forum and something like the Landy, if it could be independent? Come on you entrepreneurs!
  6. We had a D1 and a Defender, both '98 300TDi's, and needed to change the D1 so we had a go in a new Defender and Freelander but I'm afraid to say we didn't buy either and have moved away from LR! Still got them both but the D1 will go after Xmas. Good luck.
  7. We put an EMPTY Chanel No5 bottle on fleabay and it sold for a couple of quid + postage!
  8. Don't the SIII club do a special on window channel? Don't think you need to be a member, might be worth a look.....
  9. Hi Jason, another" don't know you" but I can sympathise having been in a similar position last year, thankfully I didn't get as far as hospital as I had lots of help from my Doctor early on. My very best wishes for your full recovery, it's good to see you back here. Kindest regards, Henry.
  10. Been there, done that sort of - TR7 V8 convertible, properly sorted, but those wheel nuts and sitting in diesel fumes.... My mid life crisis led me to a NCF Sahara, using our old mechanically perfect Disco and rebuilding for longevity we should have the best of both worlds - 100" wheelbase (no IVA), Disco cabin and comfort, Defender(ish) looks. Light weight so the 300 TDi should give adequate(ish) performance with simple mechanicals, and Nick will build pretty much what you want. We'll keep the Disco and, perhaps, the 90 but that depends on how good a job I do on the Sahara!
  11. Not quite a saloon, but: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=17131 I remember seeing this when it was orange in Radnor forest, RAC rally probably, many years ago.
  12. Poke a bent plastic drinking straw up through the hole - oil down the outside air up the straw... Bit messy but it works.
  13. Put my Defender up £1k this time, should have paid it today but forgot! Good job it's in the garage being fixed....
  14. From the Defender forum, this might help http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=82694 I bought a job lot of bits from a bloke who was going to use them to build a '87 RR front axle, swivels are the same as those for my '98 ABS Disco axle, FRC7065. As far as I can see the only difference (if the axles have roller bearings) is the top pin and associated bearing. ABS pin has a hole through for a sensor, non-ABS doesn't. Shim part numbers are different but thickness is the same, probably metric/imperial versions.
  15. Thanks for confirming that Aragorn! I was worrying a bit as I'm going to rebuild an '98 ABS axle to non-ABS and now have most of the new parts, except bearings. I thought I had sussed the bit about the different top pin, and have FRC7065's, hence the panic! Cheers, H.
  16. I took a punt on some RR Classic GKN rear prop uj's on ebay recently, RTC3346, the larger 82mm x 27mm type, and won them as no one else bid! I know they fit Series, early Defender, Defender V8 and RRC to '86. If I get a RR Classic prop that uses these will it fit my '98 300TDi Disco that has a 200TDi (4 bolt both ends) prop fitted? My Disco's has a manual gearbox, I'm hoping that a prop from a manual classic will fit. Thanks, Henry.
  17. There's a row of cars like that in the desert in the US. Perhaps hes starting a UK version. Unusual colour though....
  18. If that doesn't work have a look behind the A post behind the glove box, ours had corrosion holes in there - you might have to take the wing off to confirm and fix it.
  19. Provided they are designed correctly epicyclics are much more efficient than conventional parallel shaft type gears. The manufacture of them is much more complex though so cost may be prohibitive for these applications.
  20. Never had it happen but will watch out for that in future. Last one I fitted to the Defender was a Denso and the bush did as it should. Surely its a slip bush by design and should, er, slip? I'd get it back to the supplier as not fit for purpose.
  21. Yep, saw that but it doesn't have the pipe cutter, deburring tool and pipe bending pliers as this one which is similar: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flaremaster2-Brake-Pipe-Flaring-Kit-SYKES-PICKAVANT-02729500-FREE-RAM-WORTH-66-/121067044685?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1c30287f4d My reasoning to buy the full kit was convenience as much as anything, keep it all in one place! I may never use the extra hydraulic part for steel, stainless I guess?, but as it was not listed and effectively came for free it can't be bad seeing as the above kit is £170! I should have originally added that I received the standard hydraulic part as well.... Steve it came from here: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/stanleyrharris/&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2754
  22. Having plated about with various brake flaring tools with varying degrees of success I just bought a Sykes Pickavant Flaremaster 2 full kit for £125.00 delivered which I thought was a pretty good buy. Opened the box and there was the Hydraulic part of the tool for flaring steel pipes included. May not use it but what a nice surprise! All genuine SP parts in original SP sealed and barcoded bags. I'm happy!
  23. "Also are atlas bolts a good make of bolts?" Seen atlas bolls on other older oem car stuff, you can take it that they are imperial threads as metric would have the grade on them afaik. Looks like a bargain though, well done!
  24. Hi Reb, If you still have them are the calipers for solid or ventilated discs? Cheers, Henry.
