  1. Thanks all. Sounds like thermostat 1st then muff. Steve
  2. Recently changed my 300tdi 90 ('96) for a td5 ('04) and I'm surprised at how long it takes to warm up in this weather (around 0C). At least 10 mins before the needle get about 1/4 way up and pretty close to that before any even mildly warm air appears! Two questions really... Is this normal and whether it is or not, what can I do about it?? (... apart form put more clothes on!) Thanks Steve
  3. Thanks but I've now found somewhere that can supply the correct switch. Googling suggests that the one they sent me is for pre-tdi versions. I could have bodged it but I would have had no usable 'aux' position so I'll send it back. Steve
  4. I'd seen that post but the new switch doesn't look like those - especially the numbering! In the picture, the terminals are numbered 1, 5, 2, 3, 4 starting from the small one at 5 o'clock and going anti-clockwise. 5 and 2 are the wider terminals - that's the ones at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock. I mentioned the electrical connection pattern earlier and it doesn't seem to make any sense to me! Steve
  5. I got a new ignition switch last week for my '96 Defender 300tdi. It said it was OK for that year but it the old one only has 4 connections as opposed to 5 on the new one. In addition, the old one is all 6.25mm spade terminals whereas 2 of the terminals on the new one are the wider 9.3mm. I'd be happy to adapt & put new connectors on, but I can't make any sense of the switching on the new one. The old one has a supply on pin 2 which connects to pin 5 on 'Aux', pin 3 on 'On' and pin 1 for 'start'. Nice and logical!! The new switch has ... - pins 2 & 4 connected when off - pins 1, 2 & 3 connected when 'on' - pins 2, 3 & 5 connected for 'Start' and nothing at all connected in the 'Aux' position This last is the problem, the rest I could work around! I could take 2 or 3 as the input; 1 as the 'on' feed and 5 as the 'start' but I have no power in 'Aux' which feeds things like radio, heater, etc. (... and why have 2 & 4 connected when its off???) I'd be very grateful for any thoughts and advice. I know I can go back to the (eBay) supplier but I've taken the old switch out and thus I'm off the road till I sort his out! Thanks Steve
  6. '96 300tdi. Driving with the window open on bumpy roads (i.e. all roads around here!), there is a metallic rattling noise coming from under the front. Not really speed related - more 'bounce' related! Makes no difference if you accelerate or decelerate. Makes no difference if you are in neutral. BUT - it stops instantly if you touch the brakes. Just passed its MOT so shouldn't be suspension problems, etc. Local Landie man (who is very good) poked about and found the front pad retaining pins rather worn thus allowing some pad rattle so replaced them and the pads. Great - the problem had gone completely - but a week later it's come back. (He also looked for anything loose but couldn't find anything else) Any thoughts?? Steve
  7. Yes - I meant the injection pump but thanks for the pointer - It's probably worth replacing the lift pump anyway at that price. S
  8. Presumably best to find a diesel expert to check the pump rather than 'any' garage? S
  9. Basically, all the time. It doesn't seem to be turbo related. S
  10. My 90 is at just over 150k and over the last 6 months I've noticed a slight drop in power. It's not dramatic but noticeable that I frequently have to use a lower gear than I used to. It doesn't sound different and it's not producing any noticeable smoke (of any colour!). Perhaps it's just slowing up a bit in its old age (like me ) I know it's all very vague but I thought I'd just ask the team what they thought and if there was anything specific worth investigating. Thanks Steve
