  1. so sorry! The Disco is 5 mpg (city) not on highway yet the average on my ex P38 ,used to be 13 to 14 mpg (city) ,and 18 mpg at 100-110 Km/h - 65/70 m/h (highway) C.
  2. lovely disco! i used to have one of those during my college years ! keep it original as posible,is going to be a classic in a few years C.
  3. Hello from Chile I recently trade my 4.6 Range Rover ,for a XS Discovery (1997 ,auto V8 ) ,this is my 3rd day with the disco and the fuel consumption its amazing!!! ,compared with the 4.6 ,if this goes on ,im going to be bankrupted in a few months from now On the first day ,i took the disco to the oficial dealer here, for a complete scan with a T4 .The car was Ok ,all sensors in order ,no details The Disco has 140.000 Km (86.000 miles) ,only one previous owner and impecable service sheet .Im thinking about the O2 sensors (lambdas)-catalytic converters ,but the scan says they are Ok at least the sensors,or probably the mass air flow meter Any sugestions??? Im missing my rangie!!! Reasons i change my P38 ,a trip that i want to make next year to the patagonia (i know its a V8 ,but its a 10.000 Km trip ,not a 2 years expedition) ,i was very afraid about the becm ,abs pump or eas failures in the middle of nowhere with the P38,at least with a 3.9 V8 you need a few essential parts in a box to survive ,unfortunately 300 Tdi's are not so popular here Regards! C.
  4. Hello all I dont know what happen with my gearbox ,all bearings are new, locks ,shims ,washers everything new The first problem/noise ,the reverse gear wasn´t working completely away from the layshaft, the sound was horrible!! (and this is the moment i start to put my hands in the gearbox, and in a very diplomatic way i told the mechanic bye bye) Once the reverse gear problem was solve,i still have a noisy thing (think the primary is not working properly) The other thing i notice ,is that the mechanic didn´t use the whole gasket kit (boughted in UK with other parts),there´s another gasket ,more than a mm thick covering the gearbox ,and maybe this difference in thickness is making the primary sound (this is like the main gasket in the gearbox, the one with 3 holes in the top) I have the range on 4 bases ,so i can change gear with the engine running and also we remove the inspection plates for check something unusual with the transfer box Well,my classic 1979 i think is the only one in the whole country almost restore, theres like 3 still running, and are extremely rare here,so is very complicated for me have a good mechanic ,and most of the works in this vehicle is from a restoration garage ,the 2 Land Rover shops including the dealer, doesn´t have idea about 3 door range rover......and i have to go to a jaguar/mg...fancy vintage cars, and my landy is the only one I know is complicated, but any help would be apreciated ,maybe the solution is a new gearbox ,but a brand new here is more than a 1000 pounds ,and i use this car a few times during the year.....and i already spend more than 400 in new spares for the gearbox Best Regards to all from Chile!!
  5. and the winner was........ coil to dizzy cable!!! taraaaa!! now, from a shaking engine to a smooth V8 is an amazing change i change the spark plugs for the NGK (just in case) and all the cables as well thanks aaaaa lot for the help Regards!
  6. not an amazing expedition (about 70 Km ,from Santiago to the Cordillera),but it was fun the P38 runs superbly on the snow Regards
  7. for me P38´s are the last "heavy duty" rangie built ,even with all the electronics gadgets ,but ,in these days a 10 years old P38 (in my case) has a considerable amount of problems every month ,at least one "xxxxxxx fail" ,every month my range (p38) goes to the mechanic ,never with a big failure (overheated or no air in the EAS) ,the point is,it needs a lot of attention......so,i cant imaging how complicated is going to be living with a brand new (in these days) range rover in a few more years ,maybe the nintendo generation mechanics can deal with these complex electronic monsters NOTHING compares with a 2 door Rangie or a 80´s 4 door,to be honest my first choice of a classic Landy was a petrol 1977 Series III, but then i bought a wrecked 1979 Rangie,2 door (for a single person is perfect) noisy and "shacking" V8 ,coils ,and disc brakes ,is bigger than a series and has the same comsuption of petrol.......and goes faster than a series hehehe i tested a few brand new landys (R/R ,sport ,TDV8-6 etc etc ) amazing cars i must said, really in 20 years more ,ill be driving my children in.........the classic rangie,no matter if it is only for going to church on Sundays , still is going to be a classic Cristian (P.S sorry for the gramaticals errors)
  8. firing order i think its ok,im going out right now for the spark plugs the weber carb was the solution for the emissions problem, here in Chile we have something like the MOT ,so we have to certify the cars every year ,if the smog levels are high during winter ,you can use your carb vehicle (no catalyst) at least 3 days in one week ,my P38 has catalitic converters ,so i can use it every day and i have to change those things at least every 3 years!! ,and all the filters spark plugs etc etc (at least im happy with my mpg....is a very economic V8,compared with a chevy tahoe) the other thing is that, here we have like 7 (in the whole country) ,2 door rangies (amazingly strange vehicles here) the only vehicles fitted with strobergs are some volvos and bmw´s ,but the cost of parts and rebuilt one these carbs is very high ,so a little bit more of money and i bought the weber the weber here has more parts and also service (is based in a carter carb) i really miss the strombergs, for me are fantastic carbs ,same mistic as a merlin carb regards!
  9. im using Champion RN12YC spark plugs because of the electronic ignition ,im going to make the experiment this weekend (when the rain stops here) with N12YC any better choice than Champion ?? regards! Cristian
  10. Hello all! im the proud owner (restorer) of a 1979 classic Range Rover after several problems with the stromberg carbs,i decide to use a weber convertion kit from BM ,very very nice, with an edelbrock inlet manifold included i dont know how are (or where are) the emissions (we havent tested with a machine yet) ,but gasoline fumes are horrendus if you step in the back ,and black smoke (not blue) is notorious the other thing is, i change the distribuitor for an electronic one (donated from a 1987 Rangie) ,the first two weeks the engine was running superbly ,but i left the rangie park for 3 months and now the engine is shaking ,to the point you feel the shake if you are sit inside the vehicle and if you are close to the rangie you can see how it moves i have different diagnosis for the shaking V8 -camshaft is kaputt due a cold start (chain and wheel are new) -the distribuitor is possessed by some demons or i dont know what -coil and ignition module are having problems (all new too) this range is my restoration project ,not my DD (i have a P38 for that) ,and we have other landys ........ so the classic rangie is the spoiled one here is the picasa gallery of the restoration process http://picasaweb.google.com/ureotelico/Res...nRangeRover1979 any comments about the strange shaking are well recieve ,im saving some money for a complete overhaul (again) ,rings, pistons, camshaft bla bla ......or a brand new 3.9 from Turner (the last information i had is that they dont have any more 3.5 avaliables or something like that) best regards to all from Chile Cristian
