  1. Soppy git… T’was a bloody cracking day!
  2. Yes, I’m pretty sure it was - and I hadn’t thought any more about it until a couple of years later when she bounded in the door (she never goes anywhere at a ‘normal’ pace…), saying she’d met an amazing chap who worked at Bowler and had been at Harper… Recalling this exchange, I’d then looked at her and asked, “is he called Mike…” which absolutely horrified her as she completely misunderstood the fleeting forum exchange and thought he was one of my friends…’beyond weird’ was her reaction… Needless to say, she relented and saw him again, and again… and it all went from there!
  3. My registration was back in just over a week - hopefully you are on the road by now…
  4. So… just to resurrect a very old thread…. It gave me very great pleasure to quote this thread last Saturday during my Father of the Bride speech when Jess married the love of her life… yep, discomikey, aka Brownie… Congratulations you two…
  5. How did you fare with the retest - all OK, I hope. I’ve just seen the post and could have loaned some 235/85’s that have already served duty for my IVA test on the Tornado (passed on retest… whole different story!) Cracking looking build…
  6. A mate of mine is currently doing just this, crashed BMW (previous owner had only had it two weeks when they ran out of talent…), M57 and P38. The feedback is that it is an immense amount of work with very little space space in the engine bay (he’s fretting about getting the aircon kit in the bay) and a bespoke steeling link - it’s all do-able but don’t underestimate the amount of head scratching required!
  7. OK… confession time… Given that I’d removed it all from the RRC some time ago and am now knitting this lot into a bespoke loom that includes classic RRC display, D2 dash and switches and a home-spun loom for lights etc and ancillaries, it’s come as now real surprise that I’d managed to drop the ball when connecting things together… Now traced and resolved!
  8. Thanks Simon - I think the switch is slightly different to the one you have shown as there are four connections to the switch…
  9. I’m using the running gear etc from a very rotten, very scrap 1992 RRC which includes re-use of the Wabco power brake system. Everything has been bled through and working… hell’s teeth and hallelujah, or so I thought… I now have a weird issue - ignition on and the brake lights are on continuously. This seems to be a new thing as the system was all working OK when I’d originally bled the system and the ABS lights on the dash were going out when road tested. Brakes are pumped up, and working. I’ve checked brake fluid level, all OK and have changed the brake switch for a new one which hasn’t made any difference. Fuses appear to be OK. Has anyone come across a similar issue - I’ve been through the fault-finding pages and all the errors appear to relate to lights on the dash rather than the rear brake lights being on - I do appear to have a permanent live at the trigger for the brake light relay, so suspect it’s in the ‘control’ side of things… Anyone got any thoughts or inspiration…? Many thanks!
  10. Can I possibly jump in on this thread with an’ almost similar’ request for information? I’m building a Tornado, based on a RRC chassis with Borg Warner transfer box but currently have 33/12.50/R17 tyres on the vehicle which are reasonably close to the tyre size (235/85/R16) associated with a Defender. I believe that I can run a blue speedo drive - I will now confess that I haven’t yet had a root around under the thing, but how does the output from the speedo drive turn into the yellow transducer wire that i have feeding into the back of the instrument cluster - is there another box of tricks??? Thx!
  11. @Hybrid_From_Hell - please could you do whatever is needed to allow me access to the IVA section? I’m currently (albeit slowly) building a Tornado which I’m intending putting through IVA to create a road legal vehicle and could do with any info, hints and assistance that might be to hand?
  12. @western - the link that you’ve provided for the LR4x4 IVA info doesn’t seem to work…. You also posted a similar comment in another thread which also seems to fail - can you help with where I might find the information? Many thanks…
  13. @simonr Did you ever get to speak to Mike Brown @discomikey at Blackbird Industries? If not, PM me and I’ll pass on contact details...
  14. @Chicken Drumstick - I have a part built Tornado with D2 dash and RX-8 seats if you want to wander up for a tea, a natter and a laugh at my poor progress in getting it finished... Probably not too far from you!
  15. I’m hoping someone might be able to help and advise... Some time ago there was a manufacturer who offered a slimline tapered winch bumper that had guides formed into the outer edges that would allow you to take the winch rope around the edge of the vehicle, running the rope within the guide. So... questions... Can anyone remember who made these and (if possible) provide a photo? I have in in my mind that they were by Adrenaline or one such iteration of the same company... Secondly - given they are no longer available, were they actually a pretty poor idea with bumpers just folding up under the stresses imposed by the winch rope? Hope someone can help!
  16. I don’t do anything that small (my last shed was 36m a 93m with 10m eaves height...) but you might want to talk to Murray Steel Buildings who offer cold-rolled steel buildings and are supposed to be decent prices... They may also advise on what would be needed for ring beam or foundations...
  17. As per the comment above, there shouldn’t be a problem to tie the new ring beam into the existing slab. What quality is the current slab and is it reinforced? What thickness? Dig out for the extension / ring beam and then dowel in some U shaped re-bar into the side of the current slab with the closed part of the U extending into the new ring beam - fasten the open ends into the existing slab with resin anchor (note this cures really quickly!) Install your re-bar cage or mesh for the ring beam and extension to the slab and then drill and resin anchor for your new holding down bolts - in an ideal world, I’d suggest having an above ground ring beam as this will give good water protection, preventing ingress but this would need shuttering and is a bit more involved... Steel framed building of that size would be cold rolled, easy to build and far, far less than £50k!!!
  18. The Fun Prevention Officer has form... Once with a Mini - she managed to hit a pothole on a country road (actually an unfortunately common occurrence around here...) and damaged the rim so that the tyre wouldn’t seal. The can of gloop worked until the wheel had gone precisely two revolutions, whereupon it was flat again! Then, the other day, I got the panic call saying she’d ‘driven over something’ Needless to say, I’m a firm believer in having a spare...!
  19. 92 will be a bit of a challenge as they seemed to make it up as they went... it’s something of a transition year and there’s very little (seemingly) available as wiring diagrams etc I’ve got the remains of a loom from a 92 - will have a go through it tomorrow to see if I can identify the plug that you have shown...
  20. @Escape That is perfect and thank you for providing such an insight... I’ll stick to having the lever, as per the original RRC set-up. Thanks to all who responded!
  21. So... good idea, or up there with the ‘most stupid of stupid ideas’ award? By way of background, I’m currently building a Tornado (very slowly, some would suggest...) which is based on ‘92 RRC running gear, complete with a BW transfer box. I will have to put the vehicle through IVA due to having taking 18” off the rear of the chassis so am keen to keep things as sensible and ‘normal’ as possible but am also able to build things to suit my own development ideas etc. One challenge is that the transfer lever may clash slightly with the lower edge of the dash - I can reduce the lever / arm to eliminate the clash but given the BW operation, any movement on the lever is simply forwards and backwards which brings me neatly to the thought of the P38 actuator. This would (subject to sorting the wiring) allow me to have a simple switch control on the dash to go to High / Low setting with the movement on the BW unit being controlled by the solenoid actuator. So... vote of confidence - does this sound like a plan or am I simply creating yet more points of potential failure... keep it simple with an adapted lever or put it all on black with more electric gubbins and complexity? Thoughts (and horror stories) welcomed...
  22. Depending on aesthetics and where the garage is located, you can put an enclosure externally with the roller on the gable end, thereby absolutely maximising the opening and maintaining your internal space. Might be construed as being ugly, but is certainly possible... As an alternative and something you could possibly take on yourself, I happened to notice a local place the other day and thought, “that’s clever” as they had split the up and over door vertically, added some channel or similar to form a frame at the centre point and then hinged to either side with a lock in the centre. This created two half-sized doors, thereby minimising the loads on the jambs and creating a pair of doors that gave good access to the garage space.
  23. Optimum? Ultimate... Pure or Purity
  24. Two door will be pretty much a consideration of perceived value (in the eyes of the seller) vs the time and cost of picking them up, plus stripping them (and/or finding a home for any that might sell ‘as is’) and the dead money associated with stuff that you end up with and which is unsellable. In terms of anything four door, I paid £400 for a basket case, no MOT, hole in the driver’s door where the lock was broken and no sills to speak off. I wanted it for the chassis and running gear but made my money back on selling remaining panels, internal fittings etc
  25. I hate LR dealers with a vengance.. and I speak as someone who has tried to strike a deal for 3 x D4’s and a D5 over the last 10 years - each of the D4’s did 100k in three (warranty covered) years and one spat its’ engine at 46k. Servicing team had a new engine agreed by LR, fitted, tested and back to me within five days - it did get a bit tense when I dropped the dead truck in on the back of an AA vehicle with a comment that you ‘couldn’t just turn up with a broken vehicle’ but they soon saw sense! By comparison, servicing nightmares with Audi (A5 with multiple issues), Mercedes (first vehicle rejected, replacement still had issues but we ‘just lived with it... really, on a £50k car??) and Mini. Don’t start me on Mini - over 4 months in the dealership with a series of courtesy cars whilst they struggled (and failed) to fix induction issues and poor running to the point of not being safe on a motorway or at speed on dual carriageway. Beauty in the eye of the beholder - very happy overall with the JLR service response and reliability...
