  1. Rumour is that the inter cooler from a DAF 45, 7.5 tonne truck fits straight in and gives more capacity...
  2. Frank Pickles for my D1, 300TDi - brilliant people, about £138 on a limited mileage policy Adrian Flux for the Fun Prevention Officer's F2 - cheap, but you get what you pay for and unlikely to renew with them.... long story and possibly unique but a change of vehicle (simple, you think...) turned into an hour long farce... Not impressed... D4 Commercial... through the company, so the cheapest of the lot as far as I am concerned! More seriously... Frank Pickles ONLY do modded vehicles through their scheme... hope you get sorted!
  3. The proposed project involved a number of TRO's around Stonehenge that were being introduced specifically to allow for the construction of the new visitor centre. I registered an objection and got a response a couple of weeks ago and have detailed the response from Wiltshire Council below but I think that we all need to write and request clarification that any TRO's that may have already been put in place will be lifted now that the Visitor Centre has been cancelled....First off... see information in 'Building' magazine detailed below... The government has pulled the plug on Denton Corker Marshall’s £27.5 million Stonehenge Visitor’s Centre.... The projects are among 12, together worth £2 billion, that have been slashed as part of the government’s public spending. Speaking in the House of Commons today (Thursday) Danny Alexander, the chief secretary to the Treasury, said that the projects did “not represent good value for money.” “As a result of the poor decisions made by the previous government, I have taken the decision to cancel certain projects that do not represent good value for money, and suspend others pending full consideration in the spending review,” said Alexander. “We have also found another spending black hole in the previous government’s plans - projects had been approved with no money in place to pay for them.” Plans for the Stonehenge visitor’s centre at Airman’s Corner, which was due for completion in time for the 2012 Olympics, were finally revealed last year after decades of delays and a change of site. Until now, the government had been due to contribute £10 million towards the cost of the project. ********************************** Now see their response recently received and which related to the original objection: I will endeavour to ring Kate on Tuesday for an update but should anyone else want to ask (very politely of course...), her e-mail addy is at the very bottom of the response provided... THE COUNTY OF WILTSHIRE (STONEHENGE WORLD HERITAGE SITE, PARISHES OF AMESBURY, BERWICK ST JAMES, DURRINGTON, WILSFORD CUM LAKE, WINTERBOURNE STOKE AND WOODFORD) (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) ORDER 2010 Further to previous correspondence I am able to inform you that a report on the above proposal has now been considered by the Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport who has approved that a non-statutory Public Inquiry into the proposed Traffic Regulation Order should be held. The proposed Traffic Regulation Order covers only the section of the A344 from Airman's Corner to Byway 12. The remainder of the A344 from Byway 12 to Stonehenge Bottom will be subject to a stopping up application by English Heritage under Section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act to the Secretary of State once planning permission has been granted. Planning permission is dependent on the completion of an agreement with Wiltshire Council relating to off-site highway works associated with the new visitor centre. Depending on the objections made, the Secretary of State may direct English Heritage to hold a separate inquiry into the Section 247 application. As the Traffic Regulation Order is dependent on the Section 247 Order, the Traffic Regulation Order inquiry will follow the Section 247 inquiry (probably straight away) should it prove necessary and hence it is not possible to predict with any certainty at this stage when the Traffic Regulation Order inquiry is likely to be held. This decision may be accessed via the Internet at http://cms.wiltshire.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=192. The report reference is HT – 013 – 10. A full paper copy of the report can be obtained by contacting the below quoting the above reference. 4. Terrafirmas have been superb - transformed the handling, have taken stupid amounts of off road abuse and appear to be really well made (unlike the weeping, soggy Pro-Comps where they offer a meaningless 'guarantee for life') Best choice I ever made...
  5. Crikey... there's technology for you... wear indicators on a Disco! Pads is a case of checking around the vehicle - I know it sounds daft, but do remember to check both pads per corner in case you have a sticky caliper... Handbrake - you need flat ground (or wheel chocks) and a 19mm socket. Release the handbrake and then roll under the car with socket and ratchet - I have enough play in the transmission to rock the handbrake drum and attached propshaft as I tighten the hnadbrake adjuster - I suspect that most Discos are the same. When you feel it bite, reverse the ratchet and wind the adjuster back slightly. Jump into car and apply handbrake - you should be sorted!
  6. Find an excuse to hire a carpet cleaner from Homebase, B&Q etc... with the vague promise that you will be doing that grubby patch just inside the hall etc.... that way, it is considered as being 'household' and not, 'that damned car again...' Then, purely to finish off the hot soapy water that you have in the machine, you can nip out and do the car carpets that you had conveniently taken out and laid out on the drive...
  7. YRM are good and they are also on e-bay but at £35 or so per side can work out pricy... particularly as they didn't do the footwell section that I needed (and you may well need...) Sheet of 2mm steel, tape and 1mm cutting discs from Screwfix... job done!
  8. James.... Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have one of these fitted to my Disco and didn't know where it came from and as I only have one key set, I am totally paranoid about losing the damn thing! Have asked at my local specialist and he just shook his head. e-bay chap, here I come! Cheers, once again!
  9. Hi Can't help on the choice of engines... all the advice that I have seen and tend to offer relates to best condition, service history and all that stuff... no doubt someone will be along shortly on the subject of engines. However, in terms of buying, you don't say where you are, but the auction results from Brightwells always make for interesting reading... the following two are lifted direct from their last results pages: 2002 52 Land Rover Discovery Diesel Sw 2.5 Td5 Gs 5 Seat 5dr Auto 91634 miles warranted, Red, V5 here, MoT 11 Feb'11, Face Lift, Climate Control, Alloy Wheels, Twin Sunroofs, No Major Mechanical Faults, No VAT. £5,950 100% of CAP Clean 2001 Y Land Rover Discovery Diesel Sw 2.5 Td5 Gs 7 Seat 5dr 103000 miles warranted, Metallic Red, 6 Services, V5 here, MoT 26 Dec'10, Alloy Wheels, Twin Sunroofs, Colour Coded Bumper, Tow Bar, Roof Bars, Sold As Seen, No VAT. £4,800 108% of CAP Clean
  10. Box section in my sills with somewhat 'agricultural' welding... given that it was done in -4 deg, I don't think it was too bad... Note to self... MOT the thing in August to prevent the late Dec welding fest... All OK at first time of presentation. Also... if bending things in your vice involves shaking everything off the workbench, then use two bits of angle iron in a Black and Decker Workmate (facing away from each other - they are just there to create a 'clean' edge), tighten it all up and batter away with the hammer!
  11. Anyone else get this as a response... "Thank you for your recent email regarding the above proposal. All correspondence of objection or support for this proposal will be considered in a future report. If you do not wish your name to be included in the report relating to your representations (a) being made available for public inspection or (b) being published on the Wiltshire Council Website please inform me by responding to this email. I will write to you again when I have more information regarding the proposal" We were intending doing these in early May... let's hope the wheels of 'democracy' turn a little slower...
  12. Wherabouts are you? There's a very tidy Auto Disco (ES with wheels and full leather) in Threadgolds, just outside Northampton at the moment. As you yesterday, it looked like most of it was there... All the best
  13. Try Frank Pickles... they're ooop near Leeds but mighty helpful. They have a specialist policy for those of us who spend time and money on 't car - my D1 went from 280 or so with NFU to £138 with Frank Pickles... and it was a case of "Any more modifications?... Lovely.. keep going!" They can ONLY do modified - I was so chuffed with my premium that I tried to get them to do the wife's Freelander 2... not a chance!
  14. I run 235/85/16's - Saharas - and so far haven't had to cut anywhere. This is with a 2" lift though...
  15. There's two of the little suckers - if all goes well, this message should have a pdf attached... if not, please PM me your e-mail addy and I'll send it over. They are, indeed, in the left hand footwell - there is a drop down carrier and the relays are on there. If you get someone to work the light switch to dipped beam (ie on). you should feel the appropriate relays click. Needless to say, LR standardisation meant that mine were in different locations and different colours! Hope this helps
  16. Terra Firma - I got mine from Frogs Island in Abingdon who do mail order. Cracking shocks - far, far better than the 'orrible ProComps that came with my Disco... You won't regret it!
  17. Hiya... I would agree that earth issues can cause havoc with Disco lights but your problem is very likely connected to the dim-dip relays that sit in the passenger footwell. There are two relays - and various schools of thought on how to fix the issue... One is to find the offending relay, pull it out and toss it over your left shoulder with the phrase, 'dunno why I need that.' Much to my surprise, this is the route advised by my local non-franchise workshop... Alternatively, find and replace - in my instance the relay was fine, it was the little connector block that was fried! So where are these little suckers? Remove the passenger side footwell trim and there should be a row of relays - there is also a drop down 'tray' of relays next to this (behind the glovebox). In typical LR fashion, I had a relay in each location - find the one that is supposed to be working by putting a hand on the relays and getting spouse, tame child (!) or work colleague to operate the light switch... you will feel the appropriate relay 'click' as it tries to operate. If you struggle making sense of my ramblings, let me know - I have a copy of the pages from the workshop manual covering this very subject and will e-mail this if you PM me your e-mail addy. Hope this helps
  18. No difference at all when you remove the back box. I did, however, feel just very slightly sorry for the recumbrant cyclist (you know... one of things that they lay back and pedal, with handlebars beneath their backside...) as I pulled out to give him some clearance on a narrow country road. Having been idling along behind him as there was oncoming traffic, he got treated to a great gob of soot and smoke... well, the old girl has done 212k so can be forgiven for a little belch here and there!!
  19. You are a legend... THANK YOU!!! Typical Land Rover - mine has a green relay and green plug... - 30 seconds and a V excited daughter (who thinks she's being allowed to drive...) and problem resolved. Once again, many thanks Rob
  20. Thank you... have got all this exposed, but not sure what I am looking for as there are a number of relays there... my local garage reckon it's an expensive bit of kit (and un-necessary)... there are three yellow relays though! Anyone know where it is? Thanks for help so far...
  21. Thought you might like to see how I did mine... I wanted to retain use of the standard exhaust hanger just in front of the old rear box. Off with the old box, then 63mm stainless as a 90deg bend and a fabricated bit from a chap up the road.. Bob's yer uncle and Fanny's yer aunt! Hope it's of interest!
  22. Hope someone can help - I have dim-dip lights at first position on the light switch, then NO front lights at second position. I have main beam and 'flash' and believe that the culprit will be the dim-dip relay... Having got to much of the underside of the dash (including finding a hole that I didn't know about...), I am now stumped... Can anyone give me a location for the dim-dip relay on a Disco 300, '96? The Haynes book says it's on a bracket behind the passenger side fascia but what does it look like (and where, exactly)? All help (and any photos) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Rob
  23. Not as in 'is it a testable item' but they will need to move the vehicle in and out (and brake test) so a completely dead clutch may make the whole process untenable so they will refuse to test... Just my bit...
