  1. Update.... Tried listening last night...injectors 1&2 sound different than 3 & 4...much higher pitch. Not sure if old or blocked injectors would cause a knocking. What's your thoughts
  2. Thanks for replies guys. Yostampy...that's quite possible. I had a second hand one...not sure if it was totally fine. pulled mine last night and rebuilt one from the old one. Noise still there but now my breaks are hard its not pulling vacuum....ah the joys will have to put old one back this weekend. GW8IR...no change in noise when clutch depressed. I replaced clutch and all gearbox bearings 4 months ago. That's 100% Going to listen again tonight with stethoscope and see if I can hear which part of the engine its coming from. Will report back
  3. Thanks Talk. That was something I had thought about but been procrastinating. I dropped the sump about a year ago to inspect and they looks good still. Guess I'll start there.Anythingg else I must check or change while I have the sump off ?
  4. Hi Guys, I'm stumped...my 1998 Defender 300tdi (422 000km clocked) is making a loud knocking sound. I have listened with a DIY stethoscope and can't seem to pin point it's origin. From inside the cab it sounds like drivers side. I have checked the vacuum pump...not that. Lift pump fine...pumping fuel. Head gasket was changed about to years ago. Checked for leak behind block ...cylinder no4...nothing. All clean. Not using water but is using oil...burning a little blue when idling at robots and slow traffic. Been meaning to replace stem seals. Leaking oil around sump area Recently did oil change, fuel/air filter, tappets and timing...was running smoothly and quietly. ( as Landy's go) for a couple of days. Then back to square one. The Annoying knock seems to occur when accelerating. Not all the time but mostly. There's no power loss at all. Done all the basic checks..so where do I go from here... Before you say engine overhaul (im cash strapped and cannot afford that now) but what can I check to narrow it down and get to the bottom of this. Thanks Guys
  5. Hi Guys. Ive been running my old girl (300 Tdi - 368400 km) on CALTEX diesel ever since i took ownership, that being around 6 years now. I have always believed and maintained that you should run and keep running an engine on one specific brand of fuel. Well...I may be changing those beliefs. Although i have been tinkering the last month or two. Had an annoying ticking sound in relation to engine revs, especially after climing hills. Engine flush, new oil/filter, fuel, and airfilter. Did another 2 engine oil changes in the last 3 weeks. Was running 15w - 40, have switched to a high Mileage 20w - 50. New lift pump fitted this past wekend (old one seemed dodge). Kept running her on CALTEX 50ppm...and she seemed to be running better now, than before the oil changes etc. I was running low on fuel and had to fill up at another garage (ENGEN). Put in 500ppm standard diesel fuel.....and WOW !!! It's been 2 days now, and She's never run better. great accelaration, power and running smoothly. Has anyone else experienced anything like this ? I would love to hear about it. Will keep running her on ENGEN fuel to see if i'm correct in my obsevations.
  6. Thanks everyone for the great advice. Shes running great at the moment. Yostumpy...you have a good point re brake pump. My previous one was knackered...had to pull against my steering wheel while standing on the breaks. Managed to find a scrap one and interchangef the valves from that one to my old one. I may have to replace vac pump soon then. .may be on it's way out. Thanks again to all
  7. Forgot to nention...on startup this morning she ran blue smoke for a minute or two. ..valve stem seals ? Being an old girl 367 000 km do you think running her on 20w 50 engine oil would be a good call. Currently on Dello 15w 40.
  8. Quick update. Seems to be running good at the moment. Checked lift pump. Seems to be pumping. Replaced fuel lines from lift pump to filter to IP. Double ckecked and tightened fuel line connection s on sedimentor and lift pump. Setting tappets now - so holding thumbs all is cured. Tanuki..after replacing the head gasket last year..I did checked manifold bolts last month. They did seem to have worked them selves loose, so re tightened them. I may need to replace that but will see how shw runs for now.
  9. Quick update.. while priming lift pump - seems to build up pressue, then it gets "soft" I heard a very faint wheezing whilts doing this so I assume that's where air is getting drawn into the system. Will take pump off and seal, if that doesn't work then new lift pump....they not expensive.
  10. Great idea. Might look into that myself. Bled fuel filter again...took it for a spin...seemed very responsive for a couple of km. Then back to no power and ticking. So I guess I have to search for an air leak somewhere.
  11. Thanks Guys...good points. Done the vet thingy ...took a nice flexible air hose with a bolt jammed into one end. works well, but still very difficult to pin point exact location. Been taking note today, and i have had a loss in power. Revs don't get up as quick as they used to. The lift pump is a couple of months old - didn't consider that (it's new so shouldn't be faulty) but it makes sense that if lift pump's not doing it's job to assist with fuel delivery to IP, then IP is working harder to get the fuel through. Just did a quick check on the fuel filter bleed screw. Cracked it and although fuel did come through - so did alot of air bubbles . 1. Does this mean that lift pump is working but sucking in air ? 2. Leak somewhere in the fuel line from tank to sedimentor to lift pump?
  12. Thanks Guys. Checked for blowing head gasket..not that. I had that before. Blew out the back on # 4. Replaced and all well that side. It's a different sound to that. Will check injectors and clamps this weekend.
  13. Good evening Gents, My 1998 defender 300 TDi ( 367 000 km) has produced a curious ticking sound. I have been trying to diagnos this for the past 3 months to no avail. The ticking seems to come and go when it feels like it, and is more exagerated after climbing a long hill or when putting her under load for a while. The ticking seems to be insync with revs. Ticking noise coming from drivers side What i have come across, is that when i switch off and leave for a few minutes and then restart and drive it seems okay - untill she's put under load - then the irritating ticking noise come back. Things i have done/checked, in no particular order. New air filter Engine flush - new oil/ filter. this seemed to have helped with no noise for 2 weeks. then it came back. Checked fuel lines Flushed intercooler Replaced lift pump Replaced glow plugs Set tappets - twice Dropped sump - checked big ends etc. I'm at my wits end - any suggestions, help or advise would be greatly appreciated as i would love to get to the bottom of this.
  14. Hi Pete... Did replace leak back pipes when I did the filter and lift pump. On start up it feels smooth for a few seconds and then it gets lumpy...it seems alright when under load though, just lumpy on idle. I'm wondering if the cam belt jumped a tooth maybe...it was changed in December and have only done about 3000km...
