  1. yeap certainly have, oddly enough the misfire is occurs, with the blue smoke only intermittenly and then clears with a good rev. I'll have a look at the glow plugs as suggested and let you know. I don't have a compression tester for a diesel, which is a bit of a problem though!
  2. Hi Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts/experiences of the problem I'm having: Blue smoke up when revved in the mid range, accompanied with misfire/lack of power. Engine is 1995 300 TDI with 100k. To date I've given a good service with Fuchs 15/40w turbo diesel oil and changed all of the filters - to no avail. Where should I start next? Regards Richard
  3. good point - I did check the level was a little low, but I will certainly bleed as suggested and see if this remedies it. Thanks Richard
  4. Hello My 92 3.9 v8 R/R has partially lost its PAS. When turning initially there is no assistance, yet when movement has been initiated on the wheel there is some assistance, albeit very jerky. I am have replaced and tighten the PAS drivebelt, to no avail (although when I had this problem in the past it was a slipping belt). Is this likely to be the pump or the belt? Any suggestion, greatly appreciated! Rich
  5. Had a 48k service, but at 33k (includes diff oils I believe @ dealers), then engine oil and filter at 45k. As a second hand buy from a dealers, it is out of the manufacturers warranty, and is covered by a third party's warranty. I think they'll try and play the "it hasnt had a dealer service card" to dishonor the claim, even though in enginerring terms offending item has clearly had the servicing required at the main dealers. The diff whinned, on overun, ever since we acquired the car at 36k (May 08). Didnt think it would be a problem, but did check the oil level at 45k service which was fine. Only used for onroad, with occasional heavyish towing (3 tonnes). When it went it was after a steep hill with a cattle box on and livestock. After running Landrovers within agriculture for 25 years, this is the first occasion for major mechanical failure, I can only assume the defenders (110 with a salisbury Axle) are proper Landrovers now and will have to return to my old steady TDI 110!
  6. Imagine my disbelief when our 2004 TD5 Discos rear diff when bang (with a hole the size of a 2p piece) - with only 48k and a FSH! I had my doubts and was going to mention a whinning sound on overrun at speeds over 50 mph to the dealer at the next service. To add insult to injury I have been told by the dealers that Avis, the company used by Landrover assist for hire cars, will only hire a small car and not a land Rover, this all for a car I paid £15k for 10 months ago. In all my years of using Landrovers for work, including an old 92 Range Rover and 1989 110 I have never experienced complete terminal component failure. I am wondering whether the problem has been caused by lack of servicing by the dealer or this is a common fault? The only saving grace is that the vehicle is still under the warranty provided by the supplying dealer - Hunters Any thoughts?
  7. Having an intermittent starting problem - R.R starts if left for a few days, runs fine, but then refuses to start. has a good spark, so have investigated the fuel pump by testing what I believe is the feed wire (black, with a thin white line) with my multimeter. the feed is located at the top of the fuel pump, accessed via the boot floor. When the vehicle has just the ignition on 4 volts only, on cranking this leaps to 13/14v. Furthermore I can hear nothing from the fuel pump. Before departing with a thick wedge, do you think I can be sure it is a failed fuel pump from this???...... Anyone repaired a fuel pump before? Thanks
  8. RR 1992 3.9 manual, poverty spec with no a/c - thermostat After fitting a new water pump and getting the old girl back into service everything was rosey until yesterday when the temp guage sat at the bottom, and very little heat came through the interior fans, everything points to the thermostat being jammed open- what temp replacement should it be? bearing in mind original spec. I see there are 82 and 88 oc. Shes always sat just below half on the white, like most 3.9s to my knowledge Rich
  9. She is alive and well! The ticking was actually the tappets, with a new water pump she is running ok. However after using for a few weeks petrol consumption is really too high around 12 MPG and the thermostat has progressively got lower and lower. Presume the EFI thinks she's cold and running rich. The thermostat me thinks is the next port of call. Had an interesting thought wonder if an old XK6 engine out of an old XJ6 would bolt straight in - loads of bottom end torque and the EFI fitted to the later XJs actually had 205 BHP so better top end too! Anyone tried? Rich
  10. I'll go on the hunt for a like for like swap - I was using the vehicle as my daily driver and want to get it back into service ASAP
  11. My v8 3.9 (lt77 gearbox) is sadly at the end of its life; after replacing the head gaskets (with composites) and running without a pressurized cooling system for 5k the problem of pressurization has reappeared. The knock on effect has been a leak from the water pump. Appears that in my absence the vehicle was used without coolant. To my horror this evening when I was about to replace the pump, it sounds now as if one of the rings has gone....... My question is what's the best thing to do? 1. repair the existing engine; 2. replacement engine with 3.9, say from ebay or breakers subject to price 3 Convert to a different engine - Tdi 200, or maybe a Merc 3.0 straight six as from experience these engines are bomb proof, super smooth and torquey. Not sure about Tdi power in a Range Rover, ok in a Defender but too gutless for Motorway cruising..... Any suggestions please
