  1. The reason I am a little confused is the hand book says to check levels only when cold, and to remove the cap slowly to let pressure escape, making me think it should be under pressure when cold. Below is the excert in the user manual. NEVER remove the filler cap when the engine is hot; escaping steam or scalding water could cause serious personal injury. The coolant level in the expansion tank should be checked at least weekly (more often in high mileage or arduous operating conditions). Always check the level WHEN THE SYSTEM IS COLD. Unscrew the filler cap slowly, allowing the air pressure to escape, before removing completely. Maybe someone with a P38 2.5 could check their cap for me, when cold.
  2. Hi yes stone cold before I have started it, pressure is present.
  3. I have noticed that when my 1998 2.5 DSE is cold the cooling system is still pressurised, when you remove the cap on the expansion tank, is this correct, I thought it would only have pressure when hot?
  4. Typical over christmas my head gasket has started to blow on my 96 diesel (bmw) engine. Has anyone tackled this at home as a repair? and would I need any specialist tools. I have not worked on this type of engine before, and any advice is really welcome.

  7. Hi, I have seen on ebay R/R Sport grilles converted to fit the P38, I have just purchased a R/R Sport grille, has anyone done the conversion, I could really do with a guiding hand before I take the hack saw to it, any info welcome...........Thanks
  8. Hi, has anyone used molyslip in there gearbox, transfer, and axles, I found a few tubes today and wondered if anyone has experiance of the effects if any, its a P38 manual by the way
  9. A quick question, on a 1996 p38 2.5 diesel Range Rover manual, I thought all models had a viscouse fan, my 1998 p38 auto diesel version has a viscouse fan, the 1996 I have just purchased appears to have a fixed fan. Also it appears to have had the thermostat removed, is there any advantage to not refitting a thermostat?
  10. I know I am crazy, but I have bought another P38 Diesel but this time manual and left hand drive, as my right hand drive auto is outstaying its welcome here in the Algarve Portugal. So I have the brilliant idea of transfering the interiour of the R/H to the L/H as its the posh leather job, and the L/H p38´s interiour looks like a farmer kept his sheep in it. Obvoiusly the dash is a no no, but does anyone know of any likely probs doing the rest, seats, carpets, doorcard, roof lining etc. Then I will have a complete R/H drive P38 diesel auto as a spares supply, for all the bits that are likely to break on the L/H version.........just my luck it will be the gearbox..............
  11. Thank you for the info, saved me ordering the wrong one.
  12. Hi can any one confirm that the front prop shaft on a 1998 P38 2.5 TD (BMW), is the same on a manual and automatic, I have been told that they should be the same, yet parts companies show different numbers for them.........................confused
