  1. We bent the hell out of my front axle when we first started playing with hydraulic steering mounts. Have since straightened it though. G
  2. I own a torque wrench, but wouldn't take it out the drawer for that nut. FT with a big breaker bar / gun. Does that make me a rough arse ? G
  3. Why do you need to modify the shaft ? The few that we've done have all been fine, or just needed a different spiggot bush. G
  4. Here's a picture for you : Left - 4.2 LSE Middle - 4.0 P38 Right - 4.6 P38 1996 Gems
  5. I run a 4hp22 from an LSE. Thinking back, my converter might actually be out of a 4.0 RR P38. I had to swap a few bits over so i could run my MS off the standard crank sensor. But either way, i'm definately not running the 4.6 TC, it's still sat on the shelf. I run a big P38 oil cooler on my gearbox, but even when i had the 4.2 in it - could quite often see temperatures of 140 C. On paper thats not good, but touch wood it's not died yet. Hydraulic winches being driven whilst in bogs aren't nice on auto boxes if you ask me ! G
  6. Don't worry about the converter, we run a cam'd 4.6 that likes to rev through a 4.2's converter. The 4.6 doesn't fit. G
  7. I understand how people bond to vehicles, but some times you have to step back and see the big picture. Don't let your possessions possess you. G
  8. Would it not be better to sell it there ?
  9. Any prop shaft manufacturer will be able to supply them. Where are you located ?
  10. Seeing as though this is in the competing forum, most organisers require a kill switch that shuts the electrics down and engine. In the above drawing your alt will keep 12v supplied and thus keep vehicle running. G
  11. Snagger, have you got a link to your blog ? I'm really tempted by this - have a p38 parked up for bits and an older defender steering column. Which lower steering column & uj will I need ?
  12. When reversing up an embankment, drive assist is very much appreciated. You'll end up breaking winch ropes as you put a hell of a lot of strain on them (either extra traction is needed, or you just end up squatting the vehicle etc). P.s. The OP only refers to one winch, but on the grand scale of things a second winch is not a lot more cost once you have the system in place. The other one, which probably isn't good for the rope - is winch in on the front, spin wheels in reverse. Great for loosing traction and traversing sideways. G
  13. There are a number of pro's yo fitting to the crank, one that hasn't been mentioned is using the winch with gearbox in reverse. That's a major one for me. We run a 33cc on the crank and I've got a PTO drive which I plan on putting a pair of probably 30cc pumps on. I'm not sold on the whole low pressure high flow argument due to the fact that you use a lever spool block. (I can only fit a group 2 on front due to space) G
  14. What's wrong with just using a bracket from an early carb'd v8 that puts the alt on the driver's side. With a bit of fetelling lines up with the AC pulley. G
  15. As above, speedglas - choose model depending on your budget. I've got the flip front one, which in hind site is sometimes more of a hindrance due to its weight, but still - awesome but of kit. G
  16. Do you really want someone to answer this for you haha !
  17. http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/121810346998 Pic from Google showing stock position. Just needs moving aft a little to line up. Then find suitable pulley.
  18. Get an alternator bracket from an old carb'd v8, as their alt is on the driver's side. Grind off a tiny bit from the front of it (5mm ?) and your alt will line up with the A/C pulley on the water pump. G
  19. 4.6 hse, for the money I wouldn't look for a lower spec' done. G
  20. The device were 'my legs', whilst out on a trail run in the peak district. The phone knew where it was.... i didn't haha !
  21. Used it yesterday whilst out - and all worked well. I've downloaded the area around where we live / go, so it's available offline - and it did manage to tell me that i was in the totally wrong place
  22. Just downloaded viewranger, looks like it'll do what i want - thanks G
