  1. Hi, All, recently returned to the Land rover Fold having had to sell my 95Discovery300Tdi, am 80% of the way thru redoing my 1996 110 CSW 300Tdi, the plan is to replace the engine with a 3.9 using Carbs, so am collecting parts over winter, the above topic was extremely useful answering anumber of questions i had regarding Gearboxes etc I have one query, i read up on the gearbox history LT77/85/R380 Santana solid/split cases etc vey interesting, i didnt realise the Rover SD1 used a 2WD version of the LT77 (or are they all classes as 2WD before the transfer box is added?? is the low gear selection part of the transfer box or inside the main gearbox meaning 2wd and 4wd 'boxes are different? The question i hope someone can answer is regarding LT77/R380 bellhousing for the V8 there as appear to be a number of different shapes/part numbers. Will the readily available Rover SD1 2wd? LT77 bellhousing fit on a Defender/Discovery 300tdi R380 box to allow a Rover 3.5/3.9 to bolt up? Rimmer Bros list new bellhousings @ £354 :-Part no- FRC133 they say this fits the LT77 /R380 /SD1/TR8/MG etc i have seen a few others listed on ebay several using part number HRC1288 listed for use in/as Land Rover V8/LT77 SD1 TR8 / MG conversion bellhousing. but is a physically different external shape to the new ones and second FRC133 plus the starter and clutch arm appear to be in different positions in the bellhousing? Is there a difference between early Defender V8 / TDI V8 Discovery bellhousing and the later TD5 / V8 ones/ are they interchangable/All use the same gearbox casing 6bolt pattern? Any info much appreciated thanks.
  2. Hi all, I'm just about at the end of my teather tonight, i just i can't believe how much bad luck i have with cars, Would appreciate some independant thoughts on my problem. Long story short, I bought a 1996 300TDI defender 125,000 miles back in January, covered a couple of thousand miles , started with white smoke in exhaust and using water about 1 litre every 80-100 miles or so. Plenty of similar experiences written about on the internet, did some research, sought advice, general thoughts were the Head Gasket or a crack in the head allowing water into the cylinder chamber, (no visible increase in oil level) Was advised to look at a product called Steel Seal, seemed worth a try, seemed to cure the white exhaust smoke problem, but then it started leaking coolant, looked like from the water pump/base area difficult to tell, running down block and off power steering bottom hose, indicating the P-gasket or pump leaking, again was advised the water system was being pressurised ,suspected culprit was the head (now gasket/white smoke cured) possibly cracked allowing water to be over pressurised from cylinders compression . I decided to do the belt and braces approach, given the cost and hassle getting the original head pressure tested then skimmed valve seats etc i bit the bullet and bought one of the new ones from Autopost, while it was off had the following changed: Brand new head inc valves / springs / bolts / gaskets / pipes ets etc Cambelt and tensioners New glo-plugs Thermostat Water temp sender Top & bottom rad hoses, Expansion tank cap Water pump P-gasket Oil change Coolant change All filters as there is no point in taking it apart twice or three times..so i thought.. Had it all installed today and was looking very tidy, run it up to temperature all looked ok switched off, 5 mins later i'm aware of water dripping underneath coming from high up in the same area as before, dripping off the power steering pump bottom hose and also running down the block, I noticed the small pipe from the thermostat block to the radiator is very hard (as in water pressure inside not old pipe hard) CAN I ASK: 1) I have replaced most things that cause problems but still have a leak so Is there a core plug in the water pump area hidden out of view? i didnt notice one as it was being worked on? (the big one on the turbo side of block is ok) 3) Having had a new P gasket fitted i'm sure the leak is due to over pressurisation 4) There is a small black plastic valve/unit thing between the thinner rad hoses and coolant tank is this a one way valve? could this cause high system pressure if blocked or faulty ,what is is /does it do? would that only come into play if the thermostat was open? Any input appreciated, this seems a little illogical and given what ive already spent, i am, this evening somewhat cheesed off to say the least, Thank you in advance, Chris
  3. I know its the correct code as i used it straight away as soon as the dealers gave it to me back in Feb,and the radio has been working for 6 months until the battery went flat, i entered 1211 and the real code was 2411 dunno why i had thsat number in my mind as the right one but i was wrong, anyway, the good news is, i did the key to aux position thing and the security message changed to radio code in just over an hour, correct code all entered and i now hear music instead of wife's nagging! Many thanks for the prompt replies and excellent advice, cheers Chris.
  4. thanks for the quick replies, i will try the aux position suggestion prob at weekend when i can be around it to check etc, The code L R dealers gave me does work ok, its the correct one, its just that i entered it incorrectly. thanks again, i'll let you know how it goes cheers. Chris.
  5. Hi all, been lurking about on here for a while but am in need of a spot of help/advice, I purchased my bargain ebay find, a N/96 300Tdi Disco at the start of the year, always fancied one but had to convince the Mrs they were not too big and she could drive one as it would be the replacment family run about, dispite her reservations about being to big and heavy and hard to drive etc..and guess what ? she loves it...could have had one years ago. Anyway, dispite its minimal history and relatively cheap purchase price its been 100% reliable so far , even been on hols in it. had the cambelt done a precaution and i changed the water pump/belt/tensioner for peace of mind, and its been good fun. Reasonably easy to work on compared with the last moden euro box however. when i got it the battery was a bit sluggish, and the radio code was unknown, my local Land Rover dealers who were very helpful and looked up the radio/immob and alarm codes for me, Last week and long over due the battery finally expired it seems to have sucked all the power out the radio too! after fitting a new battery like a **** i entered the wrong radio code... i could have sworn it war right but was too lazy to go and look, i removed the radio and left it out the car to discharge the internal memory but on replacment all i get is 'SECURITY' on the LCD display, when i press the BND button and enter the 'correct' code nothing happens, is there some combination to reset the unit so i can re-enter my code or is it done for now? I tried the obvious like alarming the car etc incase the ecu 'talks to the radio? but to no avail, I have a newer cd player i could fit in its place but i like the original one and the volume controls by the steering wheel they are handy, anyone have previous experience of this, or do i have to go to the dealers and beg for help. cheers in advance Chris. (radio is the factory original radio/cassette player for a 96/Nreg)
