  1. Had a good look and im pretty sure it's the intermediate shaft on the transfer box as mentioned above. The gearbox is actually leaking from the drain plug so that could have been a lot worse. I think it's been over tightened at some point in its life and doesn't quite seal properly. Ive not done any work on the gearbox so far so I quite fancy sorting it myself, I just haven't got round to doing it yet!
  2. No doubt they should have tried harder and I'll go back to them and get them to have another go. It's both ep90 and ATF as I've got both yellow and red oils visible. The gearbox only seems to leak after it's been running for a while, I suppose it needs to get up to temperature, have checked the breather and it's not blocked. The transfer is leaking from high up somewhere and the oil ends up on the bolts for the bottom plate and that leaks just sat on the drive. Thanks for the list though, I'll have a good look tomorrow when it's light and see if I can go through all the ones you've mentioned and see if I can identify where it's coming from.
  3. Thanks guys, at least it sounds like its possible to stop it leaking. I do trust the garage who carried out the work so I was suprised it leaked so soon. Ill get back in touch with them but I wouldnt be suprised if its the output flange not sealing as mentioned. Im willing to cut it some slack as its 30 years old and ill probably not be looking my best in 30 years time Is it fairly simple to change the output flange with the boxes seperated?
  4. I was wondering if someone more experienced can give me some advice on a persistant leak on my gearbox/transfer box. The vehicle is a 1985 110 with what I believe are the original boxes still fitted. They were both leaking pretty badly, the gearbox from the output shaft and the transfer from the input shaft. I bit the bullet and got it booked in with a garage for them to fix it this time, which they did.....for about 5 miles and now its leaking again, although not as badly as before. My question is.....is there any realistic way I can get these to stop leaking, or is it just a case of them being 30 years old and worn enough so that a seal wont properly seal any more? I realise all land rovers leak and all that but I really don't like to accept that! Im just trying to work out if my only real option is to get a rebuilt box or if the garage did something wrong.
  5. After looking at some on google I think you might be right!
  6. This is really interesting, I didnt realise you could potentially get all previous owners. My 110 used to be bright yellow and has an odd aerial attachment. I suspect it might be an ex-AA vehicle or something like that so it would be nice to find out.
  7. Congrats, I hope you enjoy it. I bought my 110 about a year and a half ago as a complete newbie as well and its been an experience ill say that, although I've learnt a hell of a lot and done more on it than I ever thought I would be able to. As above though leaks do seem pretty much par for the course, every time I fix one I notice something else is leaking!
  8. Sounds like it probably won't be happening from underneath then! I've checked out some pictures and it looks nicely accessible from above so ill try removing the cubby box first and see if i can get access that way. I'm just hoping I haven't done the box any serious damage due to lack of oil as I only realised there was a problem when I started having a problem with the 2nd gear syncro, knowing my luck though it's probably knackered! The ARB vent looks really interesting, i didn't even know you could get something like that. Definitely one for the future.
  9. Hey all, I'm 99% sure my gearbox has a blocked breather which needs clearing. What's the easiest way to get at the banjo? Is it accessible from underneath or with cubby box removed, or is it required that I I remove the transmission tunnel? If I can do it without touching the tunnel that would be great as its carpeted
  10. Thanks all. Just got them out, they were very tight indeed. Jacking it up definitely helped enough so that they could be punched through. Another small thing off the extensive list at least!
  11. Hi all, Just had my project '85 110 MOTed and it passed which is very exciting, but now I need to do some of the less essential jobs that I've had on the list. The 1st of which is fitting some side steps so my other half can get in In order to fit them I need to take out the bulkhead tie bolts which i thought would be easy enough but they seem to be properly stuck in there. I can get them to spin and actually come half way out but not completely and I just wanted to check if there was a special trick to these. Do I need to take the weight of the bulkhead while I undo them perhaps?
  12. Thanks Vulcan that's very nice of you, I'll let you know how I get on.
  13. Looks likely to be those 2 you've listed and luckily it is the inlet one I'm missing. I'll give the place a ring on Tuesday and see if I can get my bolts back as I won't be able to work on it until the weekend anyway so no rush. My 110 is dangerously close to working after an absolute mountain of jobs so it's a bit of a shame to be stopped by a couple of bolts!
  14. I think I might have to do that western. I was just hoping if it was easy and cheap I could avoid some hassle and get a couple of new bolts. Unfortunately it's proved more difficult than I thought to be sure which part number they are, especially as the big ones are different as mentioned.
  15. Hey All, I've just had my Defender 200TDI FIP overhauled and it looks great but unfortunately it's come back missing a couple of banjo bolts. I've tried looking at the parts guides but I'm struggling to find a clear answer of what size/part number they might be. I think it has a total of 3 banjos in all, 2 larger ones and one on the pipe that goes to the turbo. I think the turbo banjo might be ERR886 but I'm missing the one closest to the front of the pump and I'm not sure what size/part number it is. I do have the larger banjo towards the back of the pump but I seem to remember this might be slightly different to the front one.
  16. Just checked it this evening and although I don't have the tools at the moment to check it properly it seems like it's got between 1-2mm of play. After reading the other thread it sounds very similar so it seems that it's time to get it overhauled. I guess at least I'll know the FIP will be in good shape afterwards.
  17. Thanks guys, sounds like its going to be something to do with the injection pump so ill get the belt off and have a look as soon as I get the chance. Nothing seems simple with this engine unfortunately!
  18. Hey All, Long time lurker, first time poster and I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers. I'm currently the proud owner of a 1985 110 which originally had a 2.5na. I managed to get a defender 200TDI engine which I've put in and I'm just doing a few things before i get it on the road. The current job is the timing belt. The problem is I've taken the timing cover off and there is a fair bit of black fluff inside. The belt itself looks ok but its obviously been rubbing as its mounted as far back on the pulleys as it can go. I'm not sure if this is just a case of the belt being fitted incorrectly before but from reading online I've read it could be caused by the injection pump pulley being misaligned but if this is the case I'm not sure what to do to fix this. I've also read this is common on a 300TDI but not 200. Can anyone give me any ideas of what to do next? I thought I'd better ask before I end up doing something stupid! John
