Disco-Ron
Replaced the lt230 on my 90 14 months ago. .. and today got a horrible grinding noise under power.... diminishes on the over run.... and goes totally with main box is nuetral coasting downhill.... I suspect the idler gear in the tbox has done a bearing..... Any Other ideas?... Not found any unexpected slack in the diffs yet.... got it on 4 axle stands running in gear but as there's no load i can't hear it
pat_pending
Drain the oil and examine for "party glitter". Also check prop uj's. The only way to properly do this is by dropping the props' and fully articulating the joints.
Disco-Ron
I dropped the oil last night..... not examined it yet... Have also removed the bottom plate from the t box... nothing shouting at me yet.... Props off and check the diffs next
Snagger
Sounds like a failed bearing. Even the prop shaft UJs behave that way when their bearings fail. Are you sure it's from the transfer box?
Disco-Ron
No. I'm not sure..... Will remove props tonight andcheck the diffs as well as i can without removing them..... the props are fine..... I now suspect front diff..... although I'm not sure how that could be heard so much over a noisy v8!
Disco-Ron
So. Its not the transfer box. .... its the front diff... pinion bearings are fubared.....
Snagger
At least you found it, and replacing a diff is easier and cheaper than the transfer box!
Disco-Ron
Generally yes..... however its a forged centre 4 pin.... currently in discussion with mr barker for a special diff that i will never break during my use.....
