Disco-Ron
I have bent up my own aluminium radiator shroud by using two pieces of angle in the vice and clamping the aly between them and using it as a folder..... works quite well up to about 2ft long

Our lot were farmers by the way so the vice got proper use. Granted I've never had a quick release vice, I've never needed one cause the 75 just keeps on going, but I don't miss what I don't know. So, maybe you'd miss quick release but I could never have another vice that didn't swivel. Mounted on the corner of a solid bench the swivel means it's extremely versatile at gripping all shape and manner of things. The 75 also has pipe clamps, a simple pipe bender and if you were very very lucky to find a complete set, it would have come with spare rubber jaws and a cylinder head mounting adapter. The next model below is the 74 (duh) but it's considerably smaller. I have some sales flyers for both somewhere, I'll post if I can find them and I'm also going to do a feature on my 75 in my web series soon. daveturnbull
Many thanks to Ron, I am now the proud custodian of a Record No.5. I'm going to try my best not to break this one, so squishing duties will be transferred to the club hammer.
Disco-Ron
I hope you have something heavy to bolt to..... When my dad used it it was bolted to a tractor based sawbench table.....

I also have a 75 amongst my admittedly far too large selection of vices, perhaps I have been spoiled by my quick release vices but it is a feature that I miss very quickly. I've never really been that bothered about having the swivel base, perhaps it's because they can slip when you are doing something silly Where is your web series sir? I'd be interested in seeing your flyers.

Peaklander
I have a Record 23 which is old. I don't know if it's comparable with these you speak of but it's fairly beefy. The quick release has never worked and when I was given it I didn't examine why this was. I didn't fix it to a work bench till about eighteen years ago and now I keep thinking about whether I should have a look. I know it's only two bolts but somehow I just can't get round to it. Do any experts know if the QR is fixable or replaceable?
CwazyWabbit
This might help you see what is wrong with your No 23.

It's a small world, I went searching the web because the brochure info I have is filed away on another computer. I found it on a mig welding forum and it's you I think talking about the 75. Fairly sure the photo below is one of the ones I have. Do you have that in the flesh!? lol, If your collection is too big maybe you'd like to part with the 75? I've no vice on the bench in the resto series (you saw right). I haven't tracked down rubber jaws yet but I was incredibly lucky to find an original cylinder head adapter! Haven't tested it yet and not sure about it at all but glad I have it. RE the swivel moving under heavy use, yep it can. I've found the twin locking pins pretty effective if tightened with a mallet or hammer.. The 74 has a toothed swivel of sorts so that there's a keying grip when it's tightened down. CwazyWabbit
I do indeed have that record catalogue in the flesh as well as two later ones. There are better pictures in the pdf's I made of the vice sections of them. There are two versions of the 74, the early one has the 'valve stem holder'. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9iwuyy1vzrwvszs/AAApmsWFvTmKRWUj53V7eiwla?dl=0&preview=1935-pocket-Record-No-14.pdf https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9iwuyy1vzrwvszs/AAApmsWFvTmKRWUj53V7eiwla?dl=0&preview=1950-pocket-Record-No-16.pdf Later full size 'colour' https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9iwuyy1vzrwvszs/AAApmsWFvTmKRWUj53V7eiwla?dl=0&preview=1963-Record-No-17-Vices.pdf One day I'll sell some of my vices ...... not today though

daveturnbull
If I was to ever start collecting something (and it can't be Land Rovers, I'd get in far too much trouble) then I think it would have to be old vices. Locally to me there are currently for sale a Record No. 75, Record No. 74 and Parkinsons No. 8 which I am currently resisting. The other day I found this which some of you might enjoy. muddy
I have a 75 in the back of the van for on site duties and it's awsome. I'm not a fan of quick releases they always seem to jump just as you let go of the two sockets half a uj and a bloody heavy pto shaft you have balanced on your now very greasy shoulder. I never noticed the pipe jaw I might have to try and knock something up. definatly need a few minutes of vice talk in your series! will.
