TD5 Wierdness

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, i experienced a strange issue with my 05 Defender TD5 yesterday. I can not get fault codes read until later in the week so just wondering if the collective has any experience of the following.

Drove for about an hour and parked up for an hour, truck started fine and was running as good as ever, parked up again after 30 min for about another hour and then on starting up again, during tickover the engine stutters and then surges, engine light comes on, glow plug light comes on and temp gauge crashes to zero! all this happens within a second then normal tickover and then another blip and so on. It cleared when i revved it and then drove home as normal. When the temp gauge falls it does not fall slowly like when the ignition is turned off, it goes back very quickly.

I am thinking bad earth somewhere or chaffed wiring maybe, anyone had similar?

Pretty sure this is due to a loose earth connection, possibly the one in the bottom of the seatbox under the engine ECU. Another common dodgy earth point is the one on the bulkhead behind the coolant expansion tank.
