Return Of The Winch Bumper

Recommended Posts

Some may remember I had to modify my custom made winch bumper

to house the 8274-50 (X9 before).

Well,after some chit-chat with John (Bush65),WW and!Nige (master!master!)

I tried to follow their hints/guidelines and what I have now is this...

P.S.

Nige is a great storyteller, about giants tales with Land Rovers...lovely!

:D

OK,pics now.

Comments are welcome as usual,I'm wearing my kevlar suit just in case...

:P

Michele, really nice looking welds, wish mine looked as neat, you need to go heavier with your metal if you want to keep up with Nige, :D:D:D

Seriously though, to my admittedly fairly inexperienced eye, I would like to see some gussets coming from the front edge of the winch mount & angling back toward the bumper mounts, otherwise I can see a large turning force on the bumper around the area between the end of the chassis rails & the winch mount itself. Perhaps for ultimate effect tie this to a plate going from the bumper adjacent to the chassis rails back onto the chassis to where the tie down eye bolts on, good opportunity to build in some hi lift mounts. But hey, they are really rather lovely looking welds. ;)

HTH, Cheers, Steve.

PS This is what I was trying to say.

Thanks Steve for the nice comments.

:)

It was and it is difficult to visualize brackets/reinforcements through posts/email,

as I experienced with Nige...I use drawings most of the time to avoid misunderstandings...

To make things clearer I added:

4 brackets on front;2 big under the cradle and 2 smaller under the stiffener

and

2 "ears" behind the stiffener

plus

3 plates "in" the bumper section (wonder what could happen to the car in front of me,er...)

a plate going from the bumper adjacent to the chassis rails back onto the chassis to where the tie down eye bolts

Yeah,I really miss these!

Next time...I'm really bored/tired now of all the refinements and trips to/from the workshop and time...

I just want to take a breath and do some wheeling and enjoy the old girl

Sort of "battery charging",you know what I mean.

;)

ongood opportunity to build in some hi lift mounts

Ah!Ah!My Jackall (proudly Canadian!) is safely stored in the back...

Move it to the front with bumper and 8274 and my Cube would probably sink...!

Michele, I think we crossed over posts there, I've added a couple of modified pics to my post to try & be clearer, then saw your post after I'd done that. By Hi lift ( OK then Jackall ;) ) mounts, I meant the tube bits that some guys weld into their bumpers & some put under them, not something to hang it from, a good way to get it rusty & full of crud :o . Cheers, Steve.

Sort of winch bar?

I kept mine as minimal as possible to save on weight...it's also illegal unless you have it registered on your logbook...nice country...

Edited to say:

GROWL!!!!

THIS DAMNED DOUBLE POSTING!!!!!

Ah,I see the modified pics now.

Uhm,it could have been an idea...

The fabricator granted the winch cradle/bumper will not fail

(some nice extreme scenario I'm not interested into experiencing!)

the mountings would do before...that's why I'll add brackets later...

True!

Wait until I'll have the forum logo done so I'll add another one!

:)

P.S.

I have the unfashionable Husky in the box...mmh mmh!

Must admit I'm looking fwd to seeing what you do with the Logo.

And the Husky. Going in the back?

As to the logo I'm really missing a digital camera now to speed up the work.

I could take another route,I'll see, depending on my mood

(which is really unstable!)

As to the Husky...yup!

Plan A was to keep it and find a way to put it in the back without chopping/welding the chassis.

This would need the truck cab I'm looking for...

Plan B (should A fail) could be to keep it until I find a LWT/SII

to move onto...shame this requires more money and time!

:(

Plan C (should A & B fail) is to sell it.

Yup.

That's why I'm planning to fab/add side plates and use the hole where the

jate rings are usually fitted.

Whenever I'll have the will/chance...

I think it's safe enough, unless big shocks happen...

...i.e. some brutal towing...which I don't allow...but what's the winch for then?

:D

Thanks Ralph for having cleaned around...

;)
