Wiring an electric brake controller on S socket in defender 110

Hi

I have a (new to us) 2011 110 defender.

It has a N tow socket fitted.

I need to use an S socket to power the electric brakes on an American caravan.

The S socket doesn't need to do anything else - eg reverse lights/ fridge.

I have found a previous post which was helpful:

https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/87398-extra-cig-lighter-power-feed-in-rear/

I have been told by someone to wire it as following

Therefore I was thinking

  1. Find C1962 on the LR
  2. Hopefully here.                https://www.landroverworkshop.com/connectors/defender-2002my/C1692
  3. Buy connector from polevolt 3rd one down.             http://www.polevolt.co.uk/acatalog/Mulitple_Connectors.html
  4. Buy non insulated crimps.          Crimping pliers               https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XRBCS6N/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_u4tWzbSVR4NM8
  5. Buy thin wall wire, run in conduit, so that s socket has a live from the S socket to the purple wire in C1692 and  a separate wire to the earth in C1692 from s socket. Then 2 wires, from s socket, and join together to meet brake lights.
  6. Perhaps ..... c0376 (or c1759 in 110(which it is)) but this looks a hard place to join two brake wires into. Is there a better location? Also I don't know which connectors to buy or where this connection is located.

Hope u can

  • tell me if I have the first bit right
  • Help me with which brake connector to join, which connector to buy and where I might find it.

Thank u

I might have the wrong end of the stick here, but it looks like you want to mount your brake controllor in the caravan?

Googling for Prodigy* brake controllers shows they're meant to be mounted on the dash, as they require adjustment and setting up, and appear to have a built-in sensor (i assume an  acceleromator a la mobile phones).  I can see this could get confused if it were mounted in the trailer?  Also it appears they can be over-ridden for reversing manouveurs, which would be desirable.

I might have googled the wrong thing, however, so am happy to be corrected.

But If I am accurate, it means you need to find a fused feed on the dash and wire up as above.  Running the blue cable in conduit on the top of the chassis to the rear of the Landie to meet up with a spare pin in this 's' socket should be fairly straightforward.

If it were me, I'd go one stage further, convert 13pin electrics, not only are they are superior and more robust design, but they also have a spare pin which you could use for your trailer brake signal.

Thank u so much for answering

i have the prodigy rf which is mounted on the trailer and then has a wireless single in the cab

Someone else kindly drew me a diagram.

I have been reading more forum posts and someone said that it's better to put in a new seperate live and earth in

An u help me decide whether piggy pack or put a seperate one in, a shopping list and where to intercept the brake lights  thank u so much
