David Sparkes
Can you be more specific about a 'bunch of warning lights ... everytime he hit the brakes'. Were these warning lights, or a beep and a message? If a message what was it? 'Hit the brakes' - does this mean it only happened under hard braking, or any time he used the brakes? What 'all the usual' have you checked? Petrol Engine, Auto gearbox, you did tell us that. Is the engine running when you select a gear? What messages are you getting on the message centre after selecting a gear? What gear indication is given (near the gear lever)? Will the engine rev up after a gear is selected (rev as though no gear is selected)? Are all reactions the same whether you have selected High or Low range? Have you checked the gearbox fluid level? Any other problems, outside the warning lights and won't move? Cheers.
bazza
well, where do i start? first off when you hit the brakes hard the following lights came on - TC, ABS, Brake warning But it all worked OK, tried and tested, until the day it went to the doctor! once plugged in to the computer, no faults were showing anywhere, car or computer. Once un plugged, he jumped in it, popped into reverse, nothing happened, the selection light went to R, the engine revved as though in nuetral but nout worked, tried in drive, same light went to D and nout happened, stilled revved fine. When he tried P an the box made some nasty noises and the following warning were flashed up - TC failure, ALT failure, Fuse 22 failure and the trns case was showing no gear selected. symptons same in hi and lo, fuse 22 checked, no fuse present!!!! put one in no change. tried the usual disconnect batt leave for a bit a reconnect still same. ECU maybe? or just plain ol P38 every day driving?!?!? Any help will be gratefully recieved. Baz PS. P38 for sale very soon!
DEANO3528
Not wishing to muscle in on David's specialist subject i.e. the 38a the nasty noise you heard when engaging P would suggest to me that the gearbox was actually turning but the transfer box or propshafts weren't. Would this then point to a hi/lo selection problem or failure within the transfer box or axles?
bazza
you got a point, its a path to go down but why would the warnings be coming up?
bazza
She's FIXED! turns out the following happened 1, When she was plugged onto the computer, somehow the Alternator regulator threw its hand in. 2, that led to approx 17 volts being thrown all over place, 3, Gearbox ECU complained about this and burnt a Diode out. this led to the problems engaging any form of drive. Solution 1, a new diode was fitted to the ECU (clever bloke) 2, new alternator fitted, 3, fired 'er up, in gear and off she went, SWEET! 4, original problem of the ABS and TC light flashing still there, but a quick reset of the sensors and stuff, problem gone Thanks to WEST 4x4 for sorting it. Hi, For ABS and TC flashing, accumulator needs replacement. Edited December 16, 2019 by Rana
Escape
As above, the 3 lights coming on under hard braking indicates pressure too low, i.e. the pump can't keep up with demand because the accumulator isn't holding charge. Normally no permanent faults are logged for this, which is why none were found the first time. Filip
