Heritage Car Insurance - won't insure a hardtop Defender 90?

Afternoon All,

I've just tried to get a quote from Heritage for my Hardtop 90. After going through most of the questions, the guy on the phone then said that they couldn't offer anything, as it's a hardtop.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I've only come across problems with hard tops when they have bench seats in the back

Depends one whether they are classing it as a "van" hence it'll be a commercial policy. Lots of insurers are funny when it comes to stuff like that, even if it's not for commercial use.

You just need to shop around. It’s weird really that for identical details, one insurer (broker) can’t obtain cover, another can and is pricey and another can and is  cheaper.

I've used HIC for a while on my 109 - not this year as it's in need of some TLC and NFU too

I’m currently covered by NFU who gave a sensible price that also included a whole load of countries too, unlike some others.

It’s hard to predict who is better than who. There must be science behind the underwriting but it’s way beyond my comprehension. I just have to shop around.

Nfu for 6 years now. Great personal service good advanced cover, not cheapest but for the hassle-less service I've experienced its worth every penny.

Been with NFU since 1995, never had a problem, even accepted my chassis change with no fuss, there must be a local NFU agent in your area, don't use the main website, go talk to local agent.

I was with NFU for years until about four years ago, when they biffed up the renewal price from £400 to £800.

Now with Footman James as they do agreed value.

Do NFU still have a policy of only covering farm (or at least rural) based vehicles? I used to use them but then one year they told me they wouldn't be able to offer a policy when it came to renewal as the underwriter was pulling back from offering general motor insurance to their core market of agricultural users. The local office I used weren't at all happy as they were losing a lot of business because of it... That was a good few years back, though.

I have my house / garage insurance with NFU, every year at renewal they ask if they can quote for my cars so I would try them again.

I’m in my second year with NFU and it’s a 96 110 CSW. I did ask for a Golf price recently but that was way off the scale. 

Just saw Geoff that you asked if rural based and it’s true that I am in that ‘category’.
