Bulkhead Rust

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

In the process of sorting out our dashboard, wiring, etc... on Defender 300Tdi

As such, can now see more clearly the bulkhead as well as some of the rust. Worst example shown in image attached and really the extent of any visible.

Would be interested in some commentary with respect to how much of an issue is this and whether there is something I should do at this point while have the dashboard removed.

The rust is "solid" - as in you can't poke through it.

Suggestions?

Many Thanks,

Simon...

You could try rubbing it down then applying rust converter , looks like the water/damp may have got between the footwell steel and the bulkhead steel. Would then use brush on seam sealer and repaint , I’d also check engine bay side as well there may be corrosion there to.

It's a really rubbish design, you get condensation, and windscreen leaks heading to this area, wire brush and paint and plan for a new bulkhead long term. My Russian td5 90 needed these bits cutting out and replacing a competent fabricator welder can repair that relatively easily...

Check out the pics

Thanks for the suggestions. Will have a more thorough look over the weekend and then make decisions. Hopefully for now can deal with wire brush/rust treatment and paint. Longer term keen to galvanise chassis, bulk head, new rear cross member, etc...

@Maverk - Nice link. One to read in more depth with a cup of tea later.
