Arjan
As this forum a fountain of knowledge, hopefully somebody can tell me there is a different way... Starter motor on the RHD, 200 Tdi Ninety has died. Looking in the engine bay, I can't help feeling it is not going to be fun... Any suggestions on how to do this without taking the downpipe off ? steve200TDi
Yes, bit of a tricky/awkward job. The inlet manifold is jammed up right on top of the starter. When I had to remove it as the wires were arcing on the inlet manifold I went ahead and removed the inlet and exhaust manifold. I removed the inlet completely but just pushed the exhaust manifold over to the wing leaving turbo/oil drain all still attached. Then you have good access, albeight you have to lie on top of the engine to get in there! Steve
Arjan
Sounds like a route to take as a last resort.... I worry about undoing the downpipe - let alone the manifolds ! Whoever "designed" this should be made to change a few thousand of them on older vehicles - that should teach him !!
Mo Murphy
I leave the manifolds on. Remove the downpipe. You need to do the electrical connection by feel but that's easy enough then undo the bolts, one from above and the others from below IIRC. Maverik
Its not so bad, its fiddly but you can get to everything with extensions etc, you need to at least drop the down pipe to move it out the way to allow you to extract the motor from below, I'd say removing the manifolds up top would be a 2rd or 3rd resort...
