jordan_meakin
Like most Land Rovers, my series 3 self lubricates it's underside or as some say, leaks oil. Whilst the anti corrosion benefits are clearly beneficial, it is making a terrible mess to the concrete. It leaks all over the place. What are the best things to replace to reduce this? I did the engine sump gasket but that still leaks...sod... Also done the output flange seal and in the process of doing the pinion seal. I suppose transfer and gearboxes need attention next... Peaklander
I used a stainless steel tray out of an old bit of food production equipment. It was heavy enough not to blow away and had the added benefit of indicating the size of the leak 😑
jordan_meakin
Thanks for the replies but I meant what seals/gaskets are good ones to replace to reduce the problem.
Peaklander
Yes sorry, my reply wasn't helpful. I think you should try to determine what is leaking. Is the leak at the engine, gearbox or transfer box (or all three)? What sort of oil is it - engine or geartrain? Maybe a bit of a clean-up and wash underneath will help you. On my 88" the main leak was the rear crank seal which was a job with the gearbox split from the engine. So that might be the last one to do. As for which seals and gaskets, you will see from many post on this forum that Britpart are usually avoided and other brands preferred. Most suppliers will give you a choice of manufacturers and prices to go with them. Identify the items you need and then find a supplier and by all means ask for advice before you buy. The question will be more easily answered when you are more specific (IMHO).
Daan
Does the sump leaks at the back? Probably the T-seals needs replacing (involves removing the last main bearing cap). crank seals are among the usual suspects to. If you replace any running seals, check if the sealing surface is smooth. Daan
xychix
I had an old carpet under mine. but that made only more mess. As my car is standing still for monts i park it in the garage, wait 1 night and throw a shovel of sand on the spots that already have fresh oil to catch the rest.
