Td5 VGT Turbos.

Recommended Posts

Hi all. So looking to buy a defender td5. Been shopping around to see what the latest mods are for performance gain. I have seen the VGT turbo on a few sites. Just a few questions.

Whats everyones thoughts on them ?

Is this turbo the same turbo as the ones already fitted just with different internals?

If its the same is it possible or has anyone ever bought the internals and fitted them themselves, and if so where can you buy them?

i enjoy stripping things down a and building myself  like alot if you guys i imagine hence why i ask.

thanks for your time

The VGT is an entirely different turbo to the standard TD5 one; you need to swap the entire thing.

Also VGTs have a different control-mechanism to the standard mechanical wastegate-controlled TD5 turbo: it's possible to kludge together something mechanical/pneumatic that just responds to boost-pressure but to do the job properly (and so get the greatest benefit from the VGT - for example the flat torque-curve - without overboosting and having the existing engine-management system going into limp-home mode) you are talking some significant electronics.

Also remember the youngest TD5 engine is now 11 years old,They are very tough and long lasting engines if looked after. But bolting a load of go faster kit onto an old engine is not the kindest thing to do.If the engines history is unknown or its done alot of work,a strip and rebuild is in order.A new AMC head should be fitted as part of the job.
