western
Is it possible to replace the front diff pinion bearing in situ, (diff fitted to vehicle) ? I know I can replace the seal, but just not sure if the bearing can be changed without removing the diff.
landroversforever
The one closest to the seal? I think you'll struggle as you won't be able to move the pinion out of the way?
western
yes the bearing at the prop flange end
Hybrid_From_Hell
That bearing will affect the preload and would be a tricky but not impossible job on the LR. If the pinion bearing is failing, the head and carrier probabaly not far behind .... N
western
My reason for asking was a horrid screech, which I thought I had found [transfer box end UJ of front prop was giving up, that UJ has just been replaced but prop not refitted yet] on the way home from work yesterday the screeching stopped, so I reckon it was a unseen stone caught in one of the front disc/calipers, I also have a new diff pinion seal [behind prop flange] to fit, which I can do fairly quickly, so now the screech has gone it wasn't the pinion bearing after all, it was quiet going to & from work today a round trip of 30 miles, so reckon its fine. Thanks for the info. its not the original diff, I replaced the complete unit some time ago.
western
Front diff was quiet again today so reckon it was definitely a stuck stone in caliper, I replaced the pinion seal & refitted the front prop, so that should be all good now, it's well lubricated as is the front diff, I'll stick the grease gun on a bit more often. Ex Member
I can't see how you would pull the race out. Normally, the inside bearing is what fails anyway as it is highly loaded. The outer bearing does not do much.
western
Seems its all good, no nasty screechy noise driving to/from work today, so with the new pinion seal in place & diff oil topped up, I'm happy it'll be fine.
