The bonnet does have a notch but the main part seems through the wing which would be fine. I can’t find a picture of how it comes over the heater. Once I’ve fixed my dashboard squeak I’ll see if I can get the outer wing off. It does look tight under the heater. Wondering if the inner wing or bulkhead could give up a bit of space. They diddnt run the heater intake and the snorkel just came from the plenum straight out the side of the bonnet.
Daan
I wouldn't want the filter there, if you bash it or loose it, you have no filter. I reckon it is too small for a 4.6 V8 as well. Daan
FridgeFreezer
Agree, daft place of something that doesn't want to be filthy or damaged.
Greg110
Out of curiosity did you get a snorkel or is this still a discussion stage?
mad_pete
Still at discussion stage. Partly because I need to fix my squeaky dash first which means my dash is now completely in pieces. I didn't get a reply to my email so Ill phone them when I get a chance.
mad_pete
There is a more detail picture of the Devon one here. The snorkel does go through the heater intake area. I’m wondering how much a short smaller diameter section would make. I’m pretty sure a gas should speed up through the gap unlike a liquid. https://www.devon4x4.com/static/workshop/workshop-projects/devon-4x4-110-trayback/30-raised-air-intake/
dangerous doug
Do you mean reducing the diameter of the snorkel?
landroversforever
If you're meaning having a section of the tube that's narrower, you're going to get the gasses slowing as there's a pressure drop across the restriction.
mad_pete
I do, if I had to go 2.5 to get past the heater but the rest was 3 inch is that better than all being 2.5 inch.
dangerous doug
Totally defeats the point of having A 3” snorkel then. Intake/exhaust is only as good as it’s worst flowing part
mad_pete
The throttle body opening is only about 70mm isn’t it ?
Daan
2.5 inch is 63 mm. You only really want to go up in diameter. It is especially important in the inlet, as your pressure difference cannot get greater than 1 bar. If it is an exhaust it is a bit different, but still not a good idea to try to throttle the flow. landroversforever
Having 3" down to the point of narrowing and then 2.5" from there is better than 2.5 the whole way. But as Doug says your flow is only as good as the smallest point. That said even if the intake is only 70mm it will perform better open to the air. So you want as big a pipe as possible to there to minimise the pressure drop.
FridgeFreezer
If 2.5" is OK for a 2.5TDi with 1 bar boost then it's OK for an N/A up to about 5L in terms of volume of air... also, diesels use full airflow all the time (no throttle plate) whereas the V8 is only flowing maximum air at full throttle + max revs... or in other words, it's not a frickin' F1 car, don't make life hard/expensive if it doesn't have to be! 2.5" would be absolutely fine unless you're intending to go racing. Ehem, only if rev limits are the same 200TDI at 4K max, RV8 at *say* 5K means that would hold for a 4.0l engine, but no bigger. I'm sure someone somewhere did a back to back on TDI engines with and without snorkels...
FridgeFreezer
Well yeah if you're being picky - but who drives a Rover V8 round at 4-5krpm for any length of time? There's not enough petrol left for that sort of thing!
dangerous doug
The snorkel is already 2.5” so if your going to choke a 3” down to that and a 2.5” flows enough then why bother change it.
landroversforever
It will help it breath easier as it would be like running a shorter snorkel. But what the real world gains are I don't know.

mad_pete
Ok got what I am guessing is the snorkel top from RAC. :-) I can either mount as intended and move my roll cage lights over a bit. Or mount the other way and use my sarfari top. Next I need something that cuts checkerplate and defender wings neatly.
mad_pete
Okay some test fitting. The current hole is actually about 3 inch but the bonnet wants some of the space. And it wants to keep it to go up into. if I go with my current brackets I think it comes too far forward. So I think I want to go close in and come up with a new holder method and work out how to wiggle out a little for the bonnet although I will move the hole a bit anyway. Just taking the wheel spat off at the moment see if I can get the outer wing off.
mad_pete
So as I was warned it is pretty tight to get out to the side of the wing. I’m wondering if I could swap the heater inlet and the snorkel round. Have the heater feed from the hole at the back and the snorkel run in the more traditional through wing place. Does anyone know why the heater is the way it is ?
landroversforever
Probably the easiest routing into the heater fan.
