regards Stephen

So how did I get to that point?

Well I had a cunning plan

First off get shot of unwanted brackets and paint

20210627_110128.thumb.jpg.074c343a6874e2c2fff395bcfc3a7d7c.jpg

Then see where I need to be pleased I made a jig for the back axle as its getting used again

20210627_113934.thumb.jpg.6840fee11f54600d3c134ab326d32dcb.jpg

Next remove the weld holding the inner pipe of axle to flange this took ages and was wasted work in hindsight

20210627_120206.thumb.jpg.a16c91f46f52ab04096c9e59d8d622e4.jpg

If you look closely to the right you can see where weld has been broken through

20210627_123909.thumb.jpg.f19e81ae107a9beba03cc2c2bf6fa0a2.jpg

and finally completed

20210627_125714.thumb.jpg.2c0b0b9480b1852a6bd1ebdcfd1e0bcf.jpg

Next up cut the outer axle casing

20210627_144028.thumb.jpg.456c7f32bba9d3c8435a03aa881cdf64.jpg

This is the point where my cunning plan came unstuck I figured if I did all that above I could slide the outer section off nada not happening no joy whatsoever even to the point of not being gentle

This is why I had to cut along seams

20210627_145145.thumb.jpg.87c72e4ec3d08753e8d63ea46a418ecb.jpg

Plug welds and inner pipe an interference fit would not budge for love nor money

For those of you who haven't seen the inside of a double skinned 404 axle pictures below

A wee bit more done before I wrapped up for the night

Axle fitted into jig, looks like a lot of inner section to remove, this is because I was not happy just to move it to the point where it would be if the axle had been flipped. I had a measure up and figured I might as well put the centre of the diff to where the lightweight diff centre is. This involves moving the 404 diff along another 100mm or 4"

Flanged ends set up in 4 jaw chuck and bored out to a knock on fit

The last job being to cut a short section of heavy walled 3" pipe.

This is the same outer diameter, going to turn it down a couple of inches each end and press it into the inner axle pipe and weld it up and ensure strength and alignment  that's it for tonight time to rest up regards Stephen

That’s cool! How are you finding the bandsaw Stephen?

It's ok a bit slow on the bigger stuff my biggest issue with it is the vice is totally carp but I have a plan for that, when I get time

funny you should ask that when it's just thrown a blade regards Stephen

The saw looks like mine, and yes.. the vice is not very good.  I do use it as vertical band saw.  That work's very good

The vice will get sorted its easy enough. One of my future projects is to build an industrial sized bandsaw. I already have the blades courtesy of work, saw was scrapped and had two surplus blades that don't fit new saw, so that's all the excuse I need to build one regards Stephen

Big enough to cut the garage in half and make it bigger?

You were going to swap half shafts around?

That is very close and that's still going to happen. Another clue my lathe isn't big enough regards Stephen
