Help please! Defender TD5 (2003)

Recommended Posts

My defender has lost its acceleration power, I've checked all the usual suspects, changed MAF sensor, checked waste gate, replaced injector wiring loom, EGR delete, checked for oil in ECU/plugs, checked fuel pump..

My local mechanic is suggesting it could be the fuel injectors, he wants to remove them and test them individually.....is there anything else we could check first?

Any help would be really appreciated! pulling my hair out here.

thanks!

Your mechanic won’t be able to test the injectors without specialist equipment  don’t waste money there.

If you have any form of plug in diagnostics, check that the throttle pedal potentiometer is working.

Have you checked the boost side of the system?

Are all hoses in place and not split?

Has the intercooler split?

Does it rev while in neutral?

When was the fuel filter last changed?

How was the fuel pump tested?

(They can make a noise and do nothing!!)

Please give a little more detail of the situation if you can....

Thanks for getting back everyone!

More details - The defender drives but is very sluggish, feels like its lost half the torque, I can only go 50mph max and at this speed it starts to shake more than usual... also really struggles up hill... it feels like its in one big flat spot! After half an hour of driving it starts to shudder when stopped and sometimes cuts out altogether.

I'll go through the lists you have given me with the mechanic and get back..... not easy with a foreign language in the mix!

Thanks again!

Get it plugged into some diagnostics first if you can...

I'll still go back to my earlier note.. Check for leaks high pressure side after the turbo then check the fuel pump properly first and then look at Fuel Pressure regulator.

They generally wont start if fuel pressure too low but you might be borderline... As for getting worse as it's driven, shuddering & stalling it does sound like fuel starvation. (Especially if you've replaced the Injector loom)

This sound like a problem I had with mine, which I eventually tracked down to the electrical connections on the fuel pump. These had become corroded and eventually failed. My symptoms were similar. When the vehicle wasn't running, the pump would run, but when the engine started the pump couldn't keep up with demand and the vibration meant the connections became intermittent so the problem got worse until the engine stalled.

Ok, we went with the advice on here and checked the fuel pump, connections were fine, turns out the tank was full of sediment and the filter was blocked on the pump (see pic 1) the filter was cleaned and the pump was re-installed.... but then died altogether...the mechanic said it was over worked.

He replaced the pump only and not the entire assembly... is that normal? (see pic 2)

Shes running great now but there is a much more noticeable hum off the pump when ignition is turned to position 1..... is that normal?

Also, I read on another thread that a "slimy residue on the filter" is a sign that the injector seals should also be replaced... should I tackle that next? ...looks like slime/oil in pic 2!

Anyway, thanks again for the sound advice.

i would normally replace the complete pump assembly with a reputable item VDO/genuine etc,
some of the cheaper fuel pumps are known to be noisy in service straight out the box,

in regards to the injector seals & washers, the normal indication that they are failing is the pump is tinged black from the combustion gasses that have escaped into the fuel system, i have recently had to change the seals & washers on my own 110 after it started to missfire & on removing the fuel filler cap would produce a smoke cloud equivilant to an average vape user,

looking at picture 1 i would suggest adding the washers & seals to your todo list in the near future as it has the a light tinge of black

Yeah, I'm not to happy that he didn't change the entire assembly for new to be honest... i know its a big job so you might as well when you are in there... he just didn't call me at the time.

I'm gonna tackle everything myself from now on.

Ok, injectors seals next ...

cheers!
