mcc1979ian
Ok so I’m in the process of replacing my bulkhead on my 1986 90 and today went to refurb the heater but found a problem with the heater to bulkhead seal. The old one was stuck around both sides of the mounting frame but the new seat (stc952) had no cutouts to do this so I tried squeezing it within the frame in the hope it might work but on fitting it just oozes through into the bulkhead so I removed it and tried slicing a channel in it to fit round the frame but ended up with holes through it so finally threw in the tunnel. Would anyone know if there’s a different seal for earlier vehicles?
western
the heater duct to dash seal fits around the outside of the duct which then fits through the hole in the bulkhead. it should be like this when out of it's packet STC952 https://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/94136/0/heater_box_to_bulkhead_seal___defender
mcc1979ian
That’s the one I had but when I took the renements of the old one off it was as if the surround went in between it so I foolishly tried to slice it and made a right arse of it so new one on order. It just seems to big on its outer edge to go on the inner edge but also too small on the inner edge to go round. I’m guessing I’m gona need contact adhesive or some type of sealant to stick it in place
western
it should slide over the rectangular duct the goes in the bulkhead hole & then the heater unit/bulkhead is bolted up & seal gets partially compressed, the old seals do stick to one or other of the items when heater is removed. mad_pete
You want a sweet seal like this :-)......... (yeah I’m doing mine again).
mcc1979ian
Lol, that’s pretty much how it ends up when I do it. I might try putting the bit trim in on the inside of the bulkhead and see if that helps
mad_pete
I’m going to take mine off and glue it to the heater I think.
mcc1979ian
Might glue mine at both ends then hold it in position til it sets 😂
mad_pete
So is my metal bracket the wrong way round ? And what sort of glue to use please and seems like the shut out flap had some sort of foam on it at one time is that replaceable ? Heaters seem to raise a lot of questions ... :-)
mcc1979ian
My metal trim was stuck to the dash when I removed it so opposite way from yours. Iv stuck mine now with tiger seal and stuck the trim to the bulkhead too. My foam on the flap was jiggered too so I just bout a sheet of adhesive foam rubber and cut a section to stick to the flap
mad_pete
Okay thanks I got some foam at the butser jumble and I’ll grab from tiger seal from Halfords. My cables aren’t very clever and my heater to wing intake connector is missing so I grab one of those too. I plan to add some foam to the lower dash vents as well. Seems to be a gap at the bottom of the vents when closed don’t know if that is accident or design.
western
my post on how to adjust the control cables is in here & linked to tech archive index, look for 'feeling cold in your truck '
mad_pete
Great thanks, I’d managed to get one of the cables through the nut and instead of straight out the other side managed to get the cable to bend through the center so I had to cut it off. mad_pete
There that’s more like it.
mad_pete
Okay spoke a bit too soon when I fully tighten the heater it starts bulging the foam. Not too bad but I think I’ll need a spacer for the top bolts, I don’t want to cut the foam about.
western
the foam should compress between heater & bulkhead to form a proper seal, according to the parts book there are no spacers on the bolts, just a spring washer & plain washer under the bolt heads. mad_pete
It is but as I tighten it’s starting to deform the foam so it doesnt need to be as tight as it is. My bulkhead and heater are from different years so maybe that’s not helping.
mcc1979ian
Iv got the same issue. As soon as I tighten it it starts to bulge, iv poured water around the heater and nothings come through so until I have more spare time it’s gona have to do
Scotts90
I cut a chunk from mine and bonded it back together. I had the same issue that as the seal compressed it didn't do it in a uniform manner and ended up squeezing itself out at one side. Seems to have worked...no leaks in 4yrs
