leaky 110 rear diff seal

I managed to get it done the way Richard (Reb78) described above as in the end I didn't have the time to make the holding tool. It would have been easier if I had, but got it all sorted in the end.

The old seal had certainly had it's day.

Thanks all for the help.

That torque must be for the Rover diffs, Ralph.  On Salisburys, bearing preload is directly set by the torque on that nut and you don't want to crush the bearing spacer the tiniest amount past where it had been set.  The torque required to start crushing a new spacer is 200-250'lbs if I remember rightly, and the force required increases the more you crush it due to the stretching going on in the middle flare, but retightening a nut with an old crush tube I'd want to keep below the 200'lbs as the tube may have softened in use over the years of being bathed in hot oil (not annealing hot, but prolonged warmth may have some effect).  120'lbs is enough to get everything pressed up tight without risking more preload.  It's not "right", and marking the nut like you did is better if reusing the same parts, but if you fit a new bearing, flange or nut, those marks become useless and the 120'lbs is a practical compromise that worked well for me for years.
