Samson
Hi Im trying to assamble a 1977 LR 2.24 diesel series 3 and it is going well. Until now! Yesterday I powered it up and the starter was a bit slow and did not get going. I connected an extern power and suddenly when I pushed the starter button I’ve got smoke from the short speed cable as it was heating up. I disconnected it and then the diesel pump stop cable melted. The starter solinoid was clicking but the starter did not turn. Today I took of the starter and cleaned it all up and got it spinning and the solinoid to move fine. Put i back on and it was clicking again but did turn with my brand new (very expensive!) battery. Anyone got any ideas why the cables Connected to the diesel pump are heating up when I push the starter button? Hope to hear from you guys! western
You need a thick earth cable from engine block to chassis, yours is using those 2 routes to provide a earth path for the electrics, you'll end up with a burnt out truck. Happyoldgit
As Ralph says it sounds very much like a poor earth. Test by running a jump lead from clean metal somewhere on the engine block to a bit of clean metal on the chassis.
steve b
welcome to the forum , always good to hear of another series being preserved . As above your engine to chassis earth is missing - the std. one is bare thick plaited copper strands and goes between the starter mounting bolt across to the outrigger angle iron brace , 10mm eye at starter and 8mm eye to angle , around 300mm long . cheers Steve b
Jon White
As all the above have said. Classic symptoms of a poor or missing earth. jon
FridgeFreezer
What they said. You can prove it by using jump-leads from battery -ve to the engine block.
