erratic tach

Maybe someone out there can help with a little (but worrying) problem. The tachometer on my 89 won't read correctly. Sometimes it doesn't pick up, sometimes it fluctuates wildly but sometimes it works. I know a failing tach is a sign of a bad alternator but i've just had my alternator replaced. can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!

If it is anything like the Discovery 300TDi alternator connectors, then there will be a single wire on a spade connector at the back of the alternator that often works loose. You can take it off, clean up the contacts & push it back on. Some people say to use a new connector but that depends on how worn it is and if just reseating works for you, a mild squeeze with pliers can also help the connector hold.
