Copland
Hi I have a series one with a V8 and use the standard series 3 gearbox, my question is has any one managed to fit an Auto box ? If so, which box was used and what conversion ring and bell housing was used. Also was did you have to shorten your prop. secondjeremy
I think Ashcroft used to do a kit - probably using a Borg Warner box.
Bowie69
No need for a conversion ring, just use a disco/rrc V8 auto box. They are 6" longer than an LT77 setup, which is longer than a series box setup. I know someone on here has an LT77 and 200tdi in their 80, but that is tight. So, with no dirt experience, I'd say it won't be fitting in there easily at all.
Chicken Drumstick
Its certainly possible to fit a V8 and a ZF auto in an 80” Land Rover. Loads of CCV trials motors run this config. Although they are mostly on coil chassis not leaf. Many still retain the Series style front though. So I’d say it is perfectly doable. Soren Frimodt
At the 50th anniversary at brecon beacon? I crawled under an 80" with that exact setup, and boy was the rear prop short 😁
Bowie69
Well call me educated then! I am glad to hear the prop was short though!
Chicken Drumstick
This one has a ZF 4 speed auto, 4.6 V8 and a Borgwarner transfer box. And still retains the inset front rad panel. Rear prop is short, but still works fine.
garrycol
If that has the BW transfer box then they must have changed the axles etc as I understand the BW drive shafts are on the left not the right like other earlier transfer cases. Bowie69
Nope, the RRC is standard land rover offset axles. The P38a drops the other way, iirc.

Yes Transfer box is RRC not p38. I think the axles are actually D2 though.
