Replacement for a NATO hitch on a Defender

Recommended Posts

All Camels had a version of the 5te rear mounted 4 bolt pin/jaw arrangment, and 2x front mounted 3.5te 2 bolt pin/jaws, as far as I know they never ripped any of them off.

I don't think there's anything better than what you have, why not just fold up a thin tin or Ali gaurd to cover it and make it more groin friendly.

I've used a Dixon Bate two bolt pin and ball (like the Paddock ones) for twenty years with no problems, now like you I don't want it for towing so moved to a Defender recovery U bolt that uses the tow hitch holes.

The two-bolt pintles fix with two M16 bolts, the four-bolt with M12s. A bit of maths on the total cross section of boltage reveals there isn't much difference in likely ultimate tensile strength, the four bolts do have a slight advantage but the cross member will probably let go before the bolts do and in any event if you break 8.8 bolts like that then you're trying way too hard.
