keeley75
Found this vid of my maiden voyage. Brakes Gearbox and steering all functional. Phew It clunks a bit as it wasn’t locked properly in low/high range. Bit of tweaking and all sorted now.
keeley75
At this stage there is loads of bits to do but I’m struggling to do anything meaningful until the vehicle is painted. I am really lucky to make an acquaintance and friend who owns Four Elms Garage. They kindly agreed to paint the vehicle. Well the Boss told them they were doing me a favour and the boys and girls got the panels early December. I wanted the car stripped to its component panels and it all painted individually. You get a better paint job and I was fortunate that they agreed to do it in this manner. It takes longer to paint and you have to handle and store and manage panels, hinges sills, bonnets, etc etc So the plan that was hatched by Rob and his team was to get all the loose panels and then swap them for the chassis complete with bulkhead and tub. I packed all the panels into a minibus and delivered blue, red and grey bodywork. Rob sent me pics of the progress and I eventually finalised the colour. Oxford Blue Micatallic with Santorini Black arches and front grill/light surrounds.
keeley75
The quality of their work is amazing.
keeley75
Beginning of Jan the bodywork was painted and the boys wanted the tub and bulkhead. I rented a trailer and Billy made his trip to Four Elms for some magic.
keeley75
On arrival at the garage the team showed off their handy work on the panels. I will admit I was a little overwhelmed. After all this time of effort, money and dreaming. I was stood looking at the most immaculate painted and perfect panel work I have ever seen. I managed to squeeze some of the bits into the D3 and the dining room has been converted to a workshop.
keeley75
Rob sent me some more pics of the body underway. My biggest concern with the tub was to keep the character of the spot welding and wavy panels and somehow deal with the dink’s and dents. keeley75
I needn’t have worried the team produced this. They also sprayed Raptor in the tub to tidy it up.

keeley75
Hmmm it looks close from this angle. Can you imagine the reaction from the painters...... It made its way home safely unscathed... lots of people rubbernecking and waving at me at me with thumbs up!!! Reversed it off the trailer to discover a suspicious line of oil. then noticed this yep that’s right the effort I made with the steering box was an utter waste of time. I checked my receipts and I had purchased a pattern seal kit. It has lasted erm 40 meters.. FFS the box when removed from the disco didn’t leak... Genuine parts seal kit on order. Arjan
Happy to see the cat inspects the trailer ! ...ours are always all over the LR's & trailers..... We have never been lucky with steeringboxes and seal kits. Looking very, very nice !
keeley75
We had a TD5 disco and defender for several years. He’s tuned into the 5cyl drum and whenever my old disco pulls up with its new owner the cat rushes out to say hello. Anyhow my dining room now looks like this
keeley75
So the steering box. thankfully I have a Sykes puller and it’s brilliant.
keeley75
Took 10 mins to get it off. The Genuine seal is much much harder than the seal I took out . Bit like the difference between rubber and plastic. We shall see what happens. it all went together easy enough even though ATF was running down to my armpit. I really must get the wheels aligned and tighten up the drag links. However I want to get the winch and bumper mounted and front end on to settle the suspension. keeley75
I have spent the cold evenings bolting bits back to the panels. Very satisfying after all the work. The little gaskets are from YRM
landroversforever
That paintwork is stunning! What a lovely colour
keeley75
Bolted the wings back together and bonded the roll cage bracket behind the wing with Sikaflex 221..
keeley75
I also fitted the levelling headlight bowls and motors. These just fit in place of the originals and the wiring on mine was already in situ.
keeley75
Anyone got any recommendations on LED headlights. I don’t want something that looks like a UFO more traditional but modern.? Edited January 21, 2019 by keeley75
Anderzander
My recommendation would not be LED - it would be the addition of a loom and relay to take 12v direct to halogens, with nightbreaker bulbs.
keeley75
That’s an interesting recommendation. The TD5 loom is already set up with headlight relays so it would just be a bulb swap. I already have a pile of newish headlights. They just need a clean and a polish. hmmmm maybe I’ll wait and let LED technology improve a while longer. The problem for me is seller A sells their LED units for X amount. Seller B sells theirs for 3 x as much. Both units appear the same in style and manufacturing and are both DOT SAE stamped. keeley75
No it’s not a Defender it’s old enough to be a Land Rover
