Funonthefarm Posted February 5, 2019 Share Posted February 5, 2019 Hi everyone, we are completely new to the world of land rovers and are looking to buy a defender TD5. We have found one we are interested in, but wanted to ask advise about the body work - photos attached. Is this a relatively simple respray due to aluminium oxidisation or something more concerning? I have been reading about Electrolytic corrosion? Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated, as we don't want to be buying major problems, certainly for the money being asked. crwoody Posted February 5, 2019 Share Posted February 5, 2019 Looks to me like it could be simple aluminum corrosion, if it's come from a farm environment with acidic animal waste getting splashed about, that could do it. Funonthefarm Posted February 5, 2019 Author Share Posted February 5, 2019 Thank you for the thoughts, it is from a farm environment, overall the chassis looks in pretty dam good condition for its age. in its 16 year it appears to never have had a advisory on the MOT... mileage at 60k - which again seems genuine. Sharp Posted February 7, 2019 Share Posted February 7, 2019 I can't quite see the pictures very well on my screen but galvanic corrosion is going to happen where dissimilar metals meet and it tends to bubble up underneath. That's not to say someone hasn't sanded it down but with it's location it doesn't look like it. It's a common non metalic colour and quite accessible, the sill will come off easily and once you've taken the arch off you should be able to clean it up, etch prime it and touch it up to a decent standard. It's worth checking whether the MOT's were all done at the same place, if there's no advisories on a land rover then it's because someone hasn't picked them up not because they don't exist 😛 Pick up backs are quite hard to come by that haven't been ragged around a farm all their life but I can't help you with the value sorry.
