2.25 diesel overhaul

trod

Wear in the skew gear that drives the FIP & oil pump is often the cause of bad /variable injection timing . Well built with attention to such detail results in an engine that should pull easily to 50+ mph and easy starting .

The last one I built would start with no pre-heat except in the coldest of conditions and sounded as crisp as a Tdi - enough to fool others when the bonnet was shut ..

cheers

My first Landrover engine.

I hated it, bought a Datsun patrol as a replacement. That was great in comparison, with a super smooth 6 cylinder diesel that drank diesel.

I could never understand why rover persisted with 4 pot engines.

They got to five cylinders. Eventually...

I don't know of any on the 2.25d specifically, but they're pretty simple and a common design. Anything covering an old pushrod design will point you in the right direction and the injection pump principal is the same on any old diesel.

The block of a 200 Tdi is almost identical to that of the 2.25, one of the few significant changes being the lack of oil jets at the bottom of the bores on the older engine.  The timing system is different, basically the same as the 2.25 petrol and there is a Kiwi running some videos on his work - links are in the video forum, and his surname is Croker.  The head is comparable to the Tdi once the manifolds are off.  The biggest difference is the injection pump, and it's best sent to a specialist for overhaul anyway along with the injectors.  So, the manual is basically all you need b ut Mike's videos are nice for perspective and inspiration.

Have courage - these engines are pretty simple and the only big trap is the timing set up, especially the skew gear running off the cam shaft, but the manual explains how to set all that up.
