Gazzar
Speedisleeve any use? Or is it beyond that.
V8 Freak
I read somewhere that these aren't made new any longer ! When Mo needed one a while back he was told Britpart was the only official source as Adwest weren't selling to anyone else at the time... If you can get one, it may be Britpart, with Adwest on the stamp, but no telling what the final quality may be.... Paddocks are advertising new.... Rightfoot
As someone who worked for Adwest about 20 years ago, I know that about one third of all Adwest recon boxes failed within twelve to eighteen months. Fundamentally once you have wear on the sector shaft then the box will always leak again. I don't know if anyone is machining up new sector shafts etc., but I would put money on the failure rate of recon boxes nowadays being just the same as it was. Mind you looking at the prices its probably worth going recon and hoping you get one of the two thirds that doesn't fail!
Eightpot
Haven't used them but a guy from D&A Steering Ltd in Birmingham visited my workshop once a few years ago, pricelist looked good and they're still going which is usually a good sign.. Jon White
Zeus seal kit. Works well as it puts the seal against a different part of the shaft so works around the worn shaft. I had one in mine for years before I did the P38 conversion.

V8 Freak
Just had a look and they do look similar.... Like you say, some fab work to bring the location points out from the chassis rails but other than that connections wouldn't be too hard ! Daan
P38, no question. The standard ball joint fits, the spline to the steering shaft fits, or at least can be made to fit with standard parts, and last but not least, it is Land rover approved: https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&id=F7E22AB4B1C8662A8AFA42F844A95E79ED7CEBB0&thid=OIP.tllfotafEkoLfYUKaAdcygHaE8&mediaurl=https%3A%2F%2Fs3.amazonaws.com%2Fthe-drive-staging%2Fmessage-editor%2F1516212972810-lr_classic_defender_worksv8_170118_21.jpg&exph=1280&expw=1920&q=defender+70th+anniversary+edition&selectedindex=155&adlt=strict&ajaxhist=0&vt=0&eim=1,2,6 What I am planning to do on mine. darthdicky
Any idea what other works/parts are required to fit one of those Daan?

Daan
The bolt pattern is obviously different from the standard box, but with some fabwork that should be ok. On the 70th anniversary, it looks like there is a spacer plate to bolt between the box and chassis. I have never seen a 70th anniversary Landy, so I am guessing. The orientation is different on the P38, so the idle shaft sits outside the chassis rail, as opposed to inside the rail for the defender. I have got a LHD p38 box for this reason, so the idler shaft sits again on the inside (of a RHD vehicle). I can post a picky tonight if you like. Plan is to fit the box over the winter months, hopefully for my landy to be used again next summer. Daan

Maverik
Hmmm the pas box on the 70th isnt the same as the box pictures above... just from comparing the pictures.
Maverik
Bearmach are now selling sector shafts which is a bit of a game changer for me, those boxes arent particularly difficult to rebuild. https://bearmach.com/steering-box-shaft-rtc4398

Daan
It looks the same (granted the casting number is different). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FREE-FITTING-Range-Rover-P38-1994-to-2002-2-5-TD-Remanufactured-Steering/262109818042?fits=Plat_Gen%3AMK+II&hash=item3d06f66cba:g:S48AAOSwabhUVKWf Anyone on here has a 70th anniversary defender to have a look at?
Snagger
The P38 input shaft splines are the same as on the Adwest box, I think. Certainly, the P38 lower column UJ fits a Defender upper column perfectly.
paintman
Another vote for speedisleeve. Did mine (RRC) last year & used the blue coloured seal & to date not a drop. 31.75mm sleeve & you will need a suitable sized bit of tube to tap it into place. Dieseldog did a good writeup which is what I followed but photobucket have stolen the photos. Edited July 30, 2019 by paintman
Nonimouse
The adwest recon boxes now have a phosphor bronze sleeve that loses the crappy bottom bearing, they are machined to take a deeper oil seal as well - hence the huge price...no idea if they work I buy them form C&D motor factors in Bridgwater for about 200notes, recon (but not by adwest) and don't usually have issues
