Why is there a rain gutter on the Disco 2

No that is the purpose of the sunroof.

That's the D1 and RRC - they have a  little slot at the front of the gutter  that pours it right into the open window... :)

When I first saw this topic I resisted the obvious humour just in case it was a serious question :D (Its good that it didn't need me!) the answer I suspect is 'simples' it simply inherited it from the D1 and there wasn't any money in the budget to re-tool for a more contemporary 'look', D2 was done on a shoestring.

Technically, the roof panel and the framing for the roof are spot welded all down the gutters, around 50-ish spots per side on my D2.

As for function, I must agree that all they do is direct the rain to the closest point where it will leak into the cabin....
