Tyre size choice 235/85 vs 255/85

Hi Folks,

Planning on fitting some new Wolf rims on my 1997 Defender 110 300 Tdi

Can't settle my mind as to whether go for 235/85 or 255/85

235/85 - Standard choice. The later defenders came issued with that choice. Loads of folk use this. No issues.

255/85 - Main attraction is diff higher off the ground without going too mad turning it into a meaner machine. That said, might need to do a 2" lift to ensure no rubbing on wheel arches on full articulation? My shocks/springs are 24 years old and may need replacing anyhow? Reading some folk suggest this option is also better for motorway driving? Less tyre choice. Less turning circle?

Feels to me that 235/85 is the easy option. However, 255/85 does seem appealing.

Note finding good example images of compares between the two. Anybody got a 255/85 on a 110 that could share an image?

Might be deliberating this too much. Loosing sleep over this one.

I recently bought some new wolf ish wheels, and had similar thoughts, but I thought that having a spare wolf wheel with a 255 on would be one heck of a lump to lift up on the door. Whereas with 235's a slimmer 750  or 235 could be bonnet mounted.  Opted for a 750 on std rim as a spare, with 235's.

My 110  CSW is shod with 255/85R16 BFG muds 7x16 on modular rims. Suspension is all standard, nothing rubs, and I still have an excellent turning circle. I believe running Wolf rims will result in the tyres rubbing on the radius arms if you don't wind the lock stops out a little.

on my 110 i have 255 toyo M/T , stock suspension and only a little rub on the trailingarms (still need to correct that)

as a spare it's a monster , the wheel/tyre combo is really heavy !!

 

for my use ( daily driver and the ocasional holliday) perfect tyre , even the higway noise is very acceptable

Thanks for all the images folks. IMHO - The sizing looks well balanced.

Still deliberating. The size of the spare does look big. No wonder it's mounted on a swing away!

I went a step further and fitted 285/75 to mine, nearly the same height as 255/85 but wider. With better than standard offset wheels my lock is just as good as 255/85 on Freestyles

I have 255’s and love them. I like the extra clearance and the rolling radius - they make the speedo read spot on - and they fill out the arches nicely.

The biggest downside is that BFG MT’s (the KM3’s) aren’t made in that size any longer.

They don’t need a lift - they do restrict turning a bit, but seemingly nowhere near as much as the 265/75/16 did.

If you fit spacers (curse word) then you will need to trim the arches a little to stop them rubbing - and of course clean your doors a lot more.

Quite proud of my front end :) thanks for noticing :D

Presently I'm running some random BFG commercial type 235/85 R16 on wolf rims, will be replaced with Wrangler MTR's after winter. I did have General Grabber AT's 265/75 R16's on black modular's but I found them really unstable when going through heavy surface water I put it down to the width as the wet weather handling was vastly improved with the 235's.

My suspension is slightly tweaked too, there about an 25mm lift in it I think... oh and my spats have been trimmed too (not by me) which is kinda handy but annoying at the same time.

I've been looking at the Toyo Open Country MT, as my BFGs are getting pretty perished, and the Toyo looks like a sensibly priced alternative.

One thing I discovered is that compared to a BFG MT of the same size, the Toyo is nearly 10KG heavier PER TYRE!!! This is from manufacturer's data.

Really?!! The BFG tyres are pretty heavy so that seems like a huge difference. Would be interesting to get some real world data

 

What weights do they state for a 255/85 16?

Wellll, what the heck. I seem to have mis-saved that data in my head.

Pretty sure this was the article I read, which quotes a 4.5lb (2 kg) difference per tyre. (10 kg per set ;) )

They also mention the Toyo having a much stiffer side wall.

I have a set of Toyo open country 255 on wolfs on an old 200tdi 90 I bought mainly for launching boats. I was going to take them off and put on a set of sawtooth/Goodyear MTRs that I have spare but I’ve grown to like the Toyos extra clearance and as above the road noise is far less than expected.
