Gazzar
I'm going to fit some poly bushes to the 109. I've tried the original type and they failed, so I'll try these with the parabolics. I was watching a YouTube video about fitting a washer/flange to the shackle plate to stop the side of the bush from eating itself on the shackle and it kind of makes sense. If you fitted poly bushes did you do this? Did it help, or did your shackles live happily with the bushes?
Snagger
I don’t have any washers and my Polybushes have been fine.
Gazzar
Thanks nick. I'll try standard, see how they stick the abuse!
Snagger
I think I fitted mine in 2009. The 109 went into storage in 2015, so that six years with around 10-12k per year without any discernible wear. I only fitted them to the springs, preferring the protection of the outer steel sleeve that the standard bush gives the chassis eye. The chassis bushes have been fine too (I only installed the polybushes on the advice of Heystee as a cheaper fix for a slightly loosened spring eye that wasn’t gripping standard bushes tightly enough, though that could have been a batch problem with the bushes as the other spring eyes were all fine). Gazzar
I'm going whole hog on the 109. I'll be rebuilding the chassis at some stage, so changing the bush holder, if it gets worn, is no problem. So, remove all the old bush, insert the two plastic bits, sandwiching a few shots of grease, inner tube, tighten up shackles, done? Do they have to be tightened loaded like the genuine? Snagger
Yes on the assembly,I don’t think you have to worry about levelling before tightening, but it’s best practice and add no extra work so would be worth doing the normal way. Gazzar
If the tube pivots freely in the plastic, would it have any impact?
Snagger
It shouldn’t, and I greased the inside and outside of the tube and put a load of grease in the void between the two bush halves to try to keep it all lubricated. I have seen some cross drill the bolt at its midpoint and drill from the head down to the cross drilling and fit grease nipples. Probably a bit unnecessary and could weaken the bolts. Gazzar
Well, I've one in. Doing a little bit of cleaning as I go, so it's taking time. One of the issues is that the bush curl on one of the parabolics off true. No surprise that the bush failed, really.
Snowbird
When I fitted mine I found I was left with a large gap between the bush and the shackle. If I bolted up it would have bent the shackle or tried to so filled the gap with washers so the shackles were parallel when bolted up tight.
