Suffolk Defender
Hi all, I just went to start the 110 and instead of the engine cranking over i get a loud spinning sound! The defender wont start and just repeats the spinning sound each time i turn the key. I have read solenoid issues or fly wheel. But have no idea. Any pointers? is it a tricky part to change over, whatever that part is? Thanks Melv
landroversforever
Sounds like a sticky starter and the solenoid isn't pushing it out to engage with the flywheel. Try it again and when it doesn't work give the starter a couple of hits and then try again.

Puffernutter
Percussive maintenance of the starter motor required. Easy job to replace. Peter

I recently;y thought my battery was faulty but i had it tested and it was fine. Turns out i have/ had an earthing issue. I found an issue with some rear lights that i resolved by sticking a new connector block on. The lights were fixed but the starting hasn't been right since. Now this. I wonder if an earth issue would prevent power getting to the starter and cause this? 2 hours ago, Puffernutter said: Percussive maintenance of the starter motor required. Easy job to replace. Peter "Percussive" new word for me! maybe the starter is on its way out. I guess it could explain the issues i have been having with the starting. Its been starting but just hasn't had that "oomf" you get when starting a defender. Thank you guys
Puffernutter
Percussive is a word you need to get used to with Land Rovers = hit it! Peter
steve b
Is the earth strap in place between the starter bolt and the chassis ? and does the main battery earth cable go direct to the back of the transfer case ? It sounds like the starter is faulty though , I usually go for reconditioning the starter as often new units are less than durable . I use an independent specialist in Suffolk . Hitting it may get it to engage but won't fix it and if the solenoid mechanism is sticking it could stay engaged when the engine fires and potentially trash the ring gear and starter too. Remove battery earth and use a socket set , extensions will be your friend cheers Steve b
Bowie69
Point is about charging the battery, that if there's not quite enough kick, it won't fire the starter and engage with the ring gear, and therefore just spin loudly. It is of course just possible the starter is dying
Maverik
If you can hear it spinning, id say you've got a starter issue or part of it is worn out. It wouldn't spin if it was a bad connection. I had the bendix clutch go on my starter a few years ago and you hear the starter going but it just doesn't turn the engine. Mav
Puffernutter
Once off the car (not a difficult job) they are also quite easy to dismantle and lubricate. Cheers Peter

steve b
Good to hear you have it sorted , Auto-electric's 01449 781028 , ask for Ron . I've been using him for decades and always top notch . Also very good with modern stuff -ECU repair and the like . cheers Steve b
