URGENT Viscous Coupling

Am just about to replace the Viscoius coupling on my p38.

Following the instructions I had I drained the gear oil from the transfre box. When I took out the old coupling there awas a quantity of thicker oil that wasn't Dextron 2 or 3 but more like EP90. I am guessing, and it is only a guess, that the coupling has oil inside that has somehow leaked out,,

Can anyone confirm this or confirm what I am doing wrong prior to refitting in the next couple of hours.

The transmission viscous coupling is a welded sealed unit. It is not unknown for them to split, but given a minimum of cleaning any split should be easy to see.
That said, I haven't seen a split one in the flesh; I did think I had a picture, but it appears not.

Regards.
