Disco 2 V8 2003 - Starter Motor problem

Hi All,

Got a strange one here, every few days or so (well, random really), when I turn the ignition key to position 3 starter position I sometimes just get a small whine and no turning from the starter motor. When I turn the key back to zero and try again it catches straight away and starts up. Very occasionally is will whine twice on trying. It's getting a bit more regular now and worried that that starter will just give up. By the way the car has got a brand new Exide 900 battery fitted.

Do you think it's on it's way out, and what makes the whine - perhaps solenoid? I'm thinking of getting ahead on this and buying a new starter and replacing it sooner rather than later.

Which starter is recommended and what are these £70 2kw upgraded motors like you see on ebay. Don't really want to pay for a genuine one but don't want a 'carp' one either.

Thanks in advance

Probably rubbish given that decent OEM mass-produced ones cost more than that. I'd buy a used/recon genuine/OEM over cheap no-name "new" ones.

Could it be your starter relay or possibly an immobiliser sort of problem? Always look for the cheap / simple stuff 1st before shelling out proper money!

There is a small clutch type mechanism in the starter that can slip - this sounds like what you have - it slips and next time it bites and the engine turns over.  Mine failed a while back and I just replaced the part

This is a pic of a 3.5 starter and the bit is RTC834.  Later starter like yours also have this.

If the starter motor turns but no drive is getting to the flywheel then it may very well be the bendix - before failing completely they sometimes grip, sometimes not and then then engine will not turn over - but then cheap aftermarket starters are available on line for far less than the cost of buying a new bendix and getting it professionally fitted.
