What do you do when struggling with enthusiasm?

Got a couple of projects languishing unfinished... A late 2A 109 6 pot SW and an early 2A 88. Both need major bulkhead surgery, the 88 chassis needs a patch up, the 109 a new chassis. I'm currently slogging through a bulkhead resto thinking "this is utter #£_@#". Its not difficult, it's just needless hard work because it was designed/made so poorly to start with and the repair panels are less than great to say the least. I've had several fits of rage over why you'd go to the trouble of making a lovely press tool for the vent panels, only to produce panels that are designed to be a nasty bodge fit. Anyway... I digress.

We've all been here with Land Rover projects, I'm sure.... What do you do/have done/are doing to get you over the "Land Rovers are awful and why am I doing this?" doldrums? I'm kind of at the point where I need a second wind or just say sod it, flog the valuable parts and chuck the rest in the scrap. House move coming up in August, and I'm not moving it all as parts again!!

Sincerely, one very disillusioned Land Rover owner.

It’s tough ... I have two approaches: First one is to take a break, like Badger says. I’m usually telling myself ‘I’m sick of this’ and/or ‘this is supposed to fun’  - and the plan is to wait either until the enthusiasm has returned or (as a minimum) the negative emotion has gone.
think the downside to this approach is that I have 20 year old projects in the garage 😳

The second approach is be disciplined but kee expectations very low. So spend a small of time on a regular frequency - and make sure I never skip.

Even if it’s 15 minutes on two evenings - and no more. Eventually they add up and can reignite your enthusiasm too.

So the replies from Badger 110 and Anderzander are releveant to me, especially the keep it going bit; I got 1 hour on my jeep this week, but it was worth it. I now know how I am going to do the engine mounts basically.

I have pondered the 'why am I doing this' problem, then I realized I was not enjoying my Landrover anymore, the reason being that there was always a deadline; it has to be finished for an event. It's just this realization that has changed my approach: forget about the events on the other side of the country or continent, and just do something you enjoy doing. When it is done it 's done, but no deadline. This is the problem you have. If it has to be finished in August, you start pushing things and it turns into a job. So rethink the deadline idea, or at least get one car working, rather than 2, and it may not look so bad after all.

Crikey Ian, you are well on with it now, and it will be a thing of loveliness. Once there is a bit more warmth and light it's always an encouragement to do a bit more. I once had a huge pile of cobblestones to move, impossible to use machinery or even a barrow, and a friend said just do 2 a night. I did, and it is surprising how soon there was a noticeable difference. Thus encouraged, I started doing 3 or 4 some nights, and then near the end had a big push to finish. I do think back to that, the achievement is not that you finished but that you did that bit. Probably like dieting but I wouldn't know.

Almost a year on!

I'm done with Green Oval, it's pretty safe to say. Had a flurry of activity on the 88 but only to get it in one piece due a to a house move. It's currently languishing at a very kind mates garage. The 109 SW would have been moved on were it not for government incompetence managing the pandemic here, but it's found a good home when it can actually be moved.

The 109 got some use during the move, but my mates Ford Ranger provd far more useful. So I bought one. Haven't used the poor 109 V8 since.

Some pics of Stevie the blind Land Rover (he doesn't have the correct front panel):

Not really sure what to do with it. Might sit on it until it's worth stupid money and flog it, but that's contingent on storage. Time will tell, but there's an update anyway!

Well, it’s a pity to hear that, but it’s meant to be a hobby, not a chore, and forcing yourself to do it will be harmful to your health, pocket and the car itself, while it could make a good project for someone else.  We all get the same problem - I took up the old hobby of making plastic models because it’s so impractical for me to buy a Land Rover out here (cost and condition) and even less practical for me to work on it in the (employer owned) compound due to the noise, neighbours and cost of parts and tools.  But I can’t get the motivation to go out to the spare room and get started.  It was the same working on the Rovers back home - fine once I got started; I’d be out on the driveway well after dark, but getting started was a pig.  I think some of it is just age!

Ironically, if you strip out the header and just copy the address BETWEEN the image tags, the address actually works if you place it directly into your browser bar (Firefox for my test). This is the last image in your list.

Note that this image cannot be ebedded in the forum because the forum only accepts https, not the http; however, you can click on the link and get a new tab open that shows the image.

I on the other hand have a load of enthusiasm at the moment but due to house move that's taking way to long to happen. I've got no tools or any of the projects near by. On top of that, the one or two jobs I want to do on the ibex I daren't start because we'll get a moving date as soon as I take it apart. Oh yeah and we're now tier 4 so that scuppers helping anyone else/going anywhere..... Ahhhh.

Ah, thanks chaps!

Workshop got tidied, @HoSS... Moved from a double garage with upper floor to a 12 x 8ft shed and single garage for storage. Even more reason to ditch the remaining kwality LR parts junk :hysterical:

I think @Snagger nailed it: It's supposed to be fun. My enthusiasm for even working on mates LR projects has waned. When it's not fun when you're not even paying the bills or having the headaches, it's probably time to quit. Agreed on the motivation disappearing with age, I get that totally. Though lately the enforced lethargy from lockdown has hit me more than anything else and has a lot to answer for more broadly. Tinkering on your own is only so much fun even when you're enjoying the work.

I'll keep the thread updated on where Stevie ends up.

I too am in Tier 4, with lots of enthusiasm to get stuff done, but it's all at my parents house! When this all clears up, I think I'll be having a 6 month holiday at my parents to get it all done!

Mike - are you always moving?!

No point doing a hobby if it's not fun - it's why I mostly don't spanner on my daily drivers, because it kills enthusiasm for doing the spannering you're actually interested in doing on the car you're actually interested in working on.

That is very true!

Can agree with that, the D2 I had for towing was sucking up a lot of time and resources, as nice as it was to drive it was horrible to work on compared to my 90. Now just got the 90 at home and lockdown has meant I have managed to get a lot of jobs done as I can’t go anywhere or do anything else and also means I can have the 90 in a non mobile state for a period of time if needs be.
The series 2 V8 in the garage on the other hand I have lost enthusiasm for and has not been touched in over a year and is getting buried in junk. I need to give it to someone who knows V8s and get them to get it running properly as I have done what I can to it. Then may sell it or it may continue as a garage ornament. It took 5 years to get back on the road and hasn’t done much since. But basically the 90 does everything better so I use that most of the time.
So know how you feel about enthusiasm with projects it does come and go depending on their current state. A road going project does mean you can enjoy it while making progress. Non road worthy projects I have found get to a point where you think why do I bother.

No we put the house on the market back in may and still haven't moved into the new place (found in July) to say I'm fed up with it all doesn't even come close.

Late to the party but the single biggest motivating factor for me is time. We drive vehicles that sooner or later we may not have the freedom to drive.

Be it tax, insurance for modifications being increasingly difficult to obtain (fewer brokers) or legislation that we can all see looming, it's coming. I want to get a couple of years in driving the car I've always wanted while it's still allowed.

Keeping a build thread going was my way of holding myself to account to have progress on something worth talking about. I eventually realised the content didn't add anything new to the forum that hadn't been done before and to a higher standard, but it helped get back into it after years of inactivity.

If nothing else, this year shows just how much unexpected events can change what we can or cannot do and that we don't always have the privilege of choice.

The longer it goes unbuilt, the shorter the time I have to enjoy it.

Very harsh on yourself there - every build thread adds something, honestly I think almost every build thread ever posted has contained at last one idea or tip or technique that I would not have thought of - and build threads help show others in similar positions that it IS possible, even if it's not easy.

Echo that.... every thread adds to the forum. Every build thread.

Ah, I didn't mean to imply threads aren't always useful just because it's been done before. I enjoy many of the newer builds going on and seeing how people have done things; the level of ingenuity on this forum is outstanding. It's just cringey reading back through how over complicated I have made things. I certainly know how to talk up a job.

When you Series boys lose motivation, just look at the things you're working on! With a decent engine like a V8 and the looks/character of an S2 that sounds like a great vehicle. Unlike the Defender bubble that is already bursting, the value of Series cars is only going one way, so at least it won't feel that you're throwing money at something with a value less than you've spent.

I do think necessity is a big driver to all this though. When I bought my 90 I was a student and it was my only vehicle, meaning when it broke I had to fix it, and on a limited budget. While that does mean you keep it on the road and keep momentum, it does mean you're saving up jobs to do properly in a big rebuild sooner or later.

I have found that while modern daily drivers make it easier to stop working on your projects as they remove the necessity, they do remind me how bland and boring motoring has become. Better in every way, but boring.

This is a better reason than any to keep one.
