It's just this realization that has changed my approach: forget about the events on the other side of the country or continent, and just do something you enjoy doing. When it is done it 's done, but no deadline. This is the problem you have. If it has to be finished in August, you start pushing things and it turns into a job. Once there is a bit more warmth and light it's always an encouragement to do a bit more. I once had a huge pile of cobblestones to move, impossible to use machinery or even a barrow, and a friend said just do 2 a night. I did, and it is surprising how soon there was a noticeable difference. Thus encouraged, I started doing 3 or 4 some nights, and then near the end had a big push to finish. I do think back to that, the achievement is not that you finished but that you did that bit. Had a flurry of activity on the 88 but only to get it in one piece due a to a house move. It's currently languishing at a very kind mates garage. The 109 SW would have been moved on were it not for government incompetence managing the pandemic here, but it's found a good home when it can actually be moved. The 109 got some use during the move, but my mates Ford Ranger provd far more useful. So I bought one. Haven't used the poor 109 V8 since. Snagger Posted December 29, 2020 Share Posted December 29, 2020 Well, it’s a pity to hear that, but it’s meant to be a hobby, not a chore, and forcing yourself to do it will be harmful to your health, pocket and the car itself, while it could make a good project for someone else. We all get the same problem - I took up the old hobby of making plastic models because it’s so impractical for me to buy a Land Rover out here (cost and condition) and even less practical for me to work on it in the (employer owned) compound due to the noise, neighbours and cost of parts and tools. But I can’t get the motivation to go out to the spare room and get started. It was the same working on the Rovers back home - fine once I got started; I’d be out on the driveway well after dark, but getting started was a pig. I think some of it is just age! I've got no tools or any of the projects near by. On top of that, the one or two jobs I want to do on the ibex I daren't start because we'll get a moving date as soon as I take it apart. Moved from a double garage with upper floor to a 12 x 8ft shed and single garage for storage. Even more reason to ditch the remaining kwality LR parts junk I think @Snagger nailed it: It's supposed to be fun. My enthusiasm for even working on mates LR projects has waned. When it's not fun when you're not even paying the bills or having the headaches, it's probably time to quit. Agreed on the motivation disappearing with age, I get that totally. Though lately the enforced lethargy from lockdown has hit me more than anything else and has a lot to answer for more broadly. Tinkering on your own is only so much fun even when you're enjoying the work. Jon W Posted December 29, 2020 Share Posted December 29, 2020 Can agree with that, the D2 I had for towing was sucking up a lot of time and resources, as nice as it was to drive it was horrible to work on compared to my 90. Now just got the 90 at home and lockdown has meant I have managed to get a lot of jobs done as I can’t go anywhere or do anything else and also means I can have the 90 in a non mobile state for a period of time if needs be. The series 2 V8 in the garage on the other hand I have lost enthusiasm for and has not been touched in over a year and is getting buried in junk. I need to give it to someone who knows V8s and get them to get it running properly as I have done what I can to it. Then may sell it or it may continue as a garage ornament. It took 5 years to get back on the road and hasn’t done much since. But basically the 90 does everything better so I use that most of the time. So know how you feel about enthusiasm with projects it does come and go depending on their current state. A road going project does mean you can enjoy it while making progress. No we put the house on the market back in may and still haven't moved into the new place (found in July) to say I'm fed up with it all doesn't even come close. We drive vehicles that sooner or later we may not have the freedom to drive. Be it tax, insurance for modifications being increasingly difficult to obtain (fewer brokers) or legislation that we can all see looming, it's coming. I want to get a couple of years in driving the car I've always wanted while it's still allowed. Keeping a build thread going was my way of holding myself to account to have progress on something worth talking about. I eventually realised the content didn't add anything new to the forum that hadn't been done before and to a higher standard, but it helped get back into it after years of inactivity. If nothing else, this year shows just how much unexpected events can change what we can or cannot do and that we don't always have the privilege of choice. Ah, I didn't mean to imply threads aren't always useful just because it's been done before. I enjoy many of the newer builds going on and seeing how people have done things; the level of ingenuity on this forum is outstanding. When you Series boys lose motivation, just look at the things you're working on! With a decent engine like a V8 and the looks/character of an S2 that sounds like a great vehicle. Unlike the Defender bubble that is already bursting, the value of Series cars is only going one way, so at least it won't feel that you're throwing money at something with a value less than you've spent. I do think necessity is a big driver to all this though. When I bought my 90 I was a student and it was my only vehicle, meaning when it broke I had to fix it, and on a limited budget. While that does mean you keep it on the road and keep momentum, it does mean you're saving up jobs to do properly in a big rebuild sooner or later. I have found that while modern daily drivers make it easier to stop working on your projects as they remove the necessity, they do remind me how bland and boring motoring has become.
