White Smoke on Cold start 300tdi

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My 90 has started pouring out white smoke on cold startup and sounds like she’s only running on 3 cylinders and then the 4th kicks in. Runs perfect after a few minutes and on startup once warm.

Any ideas of where to start would be hugely appreciated.

There is another thread on here with an identical start, that was probably due to 2 injectors needing a service. As said above glow plugs are an easy thing to check too. White smoke can be due to retarded timing, but how would it suddenly retard? That can only be timing belt related.

Tdi s rarely need glow plugs to start unless it is extremely cold. Mine is ok down to 2c this winter from personal experience. If there is ice I do allow the glow plug light to extinguish before starting. I would look to checking compression and possibly injectors.
