white90
drive it listen for odd noises in high/low and in diff lock(if possible) if poss remove the PTO cover and bearing carrier then remove the input gear and have a look at the gear itself, with a torch you can look at the gears in the box, finally drain the oil check the drain plug for broken bits(small amount of swarf on drain plug is pretty normal. disgusting oil or burnt oil I'd leave it as it hasn't been looked after. Thanks for that, but as per my first post its not fitted to a land rover right now. Price is ok at £50 and I am told it its a good one. But do not want to fit it and find out its no good. white90
I'll read twice next time. oil and gear checks still worthwhile
Andy
turn it over by hand & feel for roughness or tightness? waggle the flanges/any gears you can reach to check for bearing play check both ratios & with/without difflock - both easy to change on a tbox standing alone
will_warne
Lock up the center diff and rotate the flanges in opposite directions. Too much play in the centre diff and the box is quite tired.
