No, not useless at all, all things considered tending to our offspring is one of our most important and vital tasks in life.

Bowie69
An update on that M5 accident I mentioned a page or so ago: https://www.itv.com/news/westcountry/2020-04-15/jail-for-lockdown-drink-driver-arrested-after-devon-m5-caravan-crash/
monkie
What an absolute fool on at least 3 accounts. I still find it hard to believe there are people who still think it's fine to have a drink and then get behind the wheel. Thank goodness he overturned that thing when the roads weren't as busy as they usually would be.

When my dad worked at the courts he said it was quite common for people to be disqualified in court, walk out and get straight into a car only for the plod to arrest them as they left the car park and take them straight back in

Happyoldgit
There is much talk among the social media chattering classes about how many "other" people seem to be getting out and about more over the past few days and how much more traffic there is on the roads. Can't say I've noticed that around here where we are lucky if we see a tractor and the postie once a day.
FridgeFreezer
Having seen the video of how they do the swab test I'm staying at home, it's like the nasal probe from Total Recall!

On the whole I'd say that I'm slightly surprised at the amount of traffic that's on the road when I've been out. Having said that the road past my house is normally pretty busy for a country lane and that's definitely quieter. When I was coming back from Carmarthen the other day there were definitely some families heading west for a holiday. Not surprised that the police have been out in force on the popular tourist routes down here in Wales.

Roads are definitely quieter and the Occado/Morrison’s distribution centre in the village is running as normal. But there’s still a surprising number of cars coming past on the ‘main’ road. Nonimouse
I had to drop down to the office this evening, pick up some mail, do some other stuff. M5 was lovely, me and one HGV. I took the very backest of back roads to the M5, just to enjoy the evening and listen to the roar of the mighty 200 My key worker status has been returned, although OH have told me I can't leave the house for 12 weeks because I'm delicate. I can do most of what I need to from home (except collect the post). Organised a road clearance last night, whilst sitting in my extension and having a chat on Off Road Worldwide. Whats app and SKYPE/TEAMS etc are making things so much easier; one of our ops just sent me a video of the incident site and that was enough... My wife has managed to move some of her stuff home, which has made it easier for me and looking after the kids, but she's still doing a lot of extra shifts on comms We are both applying for home working after this is all sorted - split the eek between us. I'll do site visits two days a week, work from home three. Hopefully I'll never have to go into a meeting again; just sit at home in my underwear talking into a microphone and pretending the video link is shot 2
landroversforever
What do you do for a living @Nonimouse outside of land rovers? Your final point about meetings rings true here... ‘can’t find the webcam’ has worked nicely for me a couple of weeks. Hoping that when we’re back at work that this time has made them realise how many meetings they actually need.
Bowie69
No need to use a webcam just because it is there, I use Teams a lot, but very rarely do I use the camera.

Funnily enough I've been using a webcam more since lockdown started than I ever have before - but all for personal use. It's literally years since I've used one for a professional meeting, and I work from home (like Bowie), so I'm in them all the time. I think they add far more when at least part of the purpose of the 'meeting' is socialising. Probably different in more of a sales/customer service type of role, but for peer to peer business meetings where everyone is there to get a task done they do nothing. Bowie69
Absolutely, I use the camera outside of work a lot, but not while working at all.

Our motto at HE is 'Progress through inefficiency, sustainable incompetence for a brighter future' but I can't say that in public I used to work for a government department and can empathise with you! Oddly, the private company I work for now, which was so much better for many years, is rapidly heading that way as the company grows without a proper management structure. Sigh.

FridgeFreezer
Some genius at my previous employer (or more likely, a conference room full of them) unleashed the company "values" of "Straightforward, Helpful, Inspiring, Trustworthy and Heart" and then got very upset when we set our e-mail signatures thusly: StraightforwardHelpulInspiringTrustwothy We thought it was very apt 1
